TightVNC Remote control of a p.c

Hi all,
My mum has a t mobile pay as you go usb dongle internet connection, does her fine, she is an internet virgin etc.
The i.p range is 10.xxx.xxx.xxx etc, not like 192.168.x.x etc as most of us are via routers etc.

Now, i know the router goes back to the ISP and broadcasts a different I.P range of the ISP say 80.x.x.x etc

so,i installed TightVNC so i could remote connect to her machine, but alas i cant,i set her machine up as the server with the service running, not being an internet/network guru any ideas/advice or of any other remote tool i could use to connect to her machine ?

yep, this is alot easier, http://www.logmein.com

Install the client on your Mum's PC then the login n connection is all web based from your machine, works perfectly and free.

cheers bud,it does look the jobby, just installed it/created account and added my machine, so i guess i need to go to my mums, login to the website, add her machine/install the software then i will have my and her machines on the web account and can connect to either machine if both online,so i could connet to my mums from here and mine from my mums ?

I wouldn't use log me in and I know Tight can be a pain as well

Simply use UltraVNC..

Download UltraVNC 1.0.8.2 - FileHippo.com

Why not? It's perfect for the job and only requires a small client to be installed.

Because it is a very basic GDS tool, you have to pay if you want to transfer/share files, you also have to go through logmein's gateway, so you can not remote control over LAN.

imo, just use the fundamental protocol of the Internet and not some company's software that tries to mimic that

bioforger 14 February 2010 06:10 PM

It's basic yes but also free. Anyway the OP didn't ask for file transfer (FTP is much more robust n secure anyway) or control over LAN so your point is irrelevant really. It doesn't mimic anything it works over the net as you would expect.

It can't be that secure can it, you are going through a gateway which you have no control over, using software that isn't open source and not subject to scrutiny.

UVNC has an encryption plugin which encrypts the entire VNC session, you can also tunnel it through SSH.

It's not a small client either really, it's over 15mb, UltraVNC is under 2mb and 100 times more powerful and it's free also.

The analogy would be going to see two cars, same make/model/age/price and then recommending to get the one with 50k more miles and no engine :lol1:

It's perfectly secure, been using it for years with zero issues. As for size, er whatever, 15mb versus 2mb is hardly going to cause an issue unless you are very anal about disk usage :) And your analogy is just well childish :)
