VPN to SBS 2008

Hi All,

I wondered if anyone had encountered the following problem:

We have a Windows SBS 2008 that 5 or so of us connect to via VPN.

4 are ok but 1 is having an issue.

If we connect the laptop (XP Pro) via VPN and go to \\<servername> we can only see the Users share. if we go to \\<servername>.domainname.local then we can see all shares.

Also if we do \\<IP Address> of server then we can see all shares.

I have tried all the usual turning off of Firewalls, AV etc.

Interestingly if you ping <ServerName> then it resolves the FQDN when.

Done some Google'ing and planty of people seem to have the problem but either they havent found a fix or the fixes they suggest dont work.

Normally it wouldnt bother me but we have a piece of software that will not use a mapped drive and needs access to the data via \\<servername\<sharename>

Sorry if its a bit of a ramble but been on this one since 7:30am and the brain is a bit dead :)

Cheers

Steve

Did you sort it?

It's a DNS issue (as it works with IP and not name) so I would suggest adding the domain name in the DNS suffix list under TCP/IP, advanced, DNS properties

Hi Guys,

Nope not fixed. I dont think it is DNS (happy to be proved wrong) but you can ping by name to the main server and other devices on the network.

I think it may have something to do with SMB as it is not stated anywhere in the registry as lots of Google results were chatting about it.

Need to get the users laptop back to HO as I think we may need to re-install the network and file and printer sharing components and can not do it over TeamViewer, well you could remove them :D
