td05 18g or 20g???

As above which would be best for MY03 sti only used as a daily driver. Got exhaust and remap so looking for the next step but not sure which one t go for. Dont want to spend loads, 1k for the turbo would be tops really so Ill have enough to get it remapped.

Cheers all

Your car's heads can flow enough for way above 400bhp, so if you want to realise more bhp potential, then defo the 20g.

Why not see if you can hold out for a second hand MD321H for around £800+? An all-round better option.....

Slowboy Racing 07 February 2010 08:48 PM

It wouldnt be worth it imo going from what you have to a 18g considering costs etc, 20g, MD321H, Blouch Dominator 2.5 XTR is the way forward.

Have to disagree, Have an 18g on mine an the quick spool combined with the higher held top end boost as compared to the vf35 makes for a very quick road car

By all means :) but im sure you would also find its better still with one of the other turbos listed above and so on. The 18G will improve the car but my main point is cost of this improvment compaired to the other options.

Mus 08 February 2010 12:27 AM

20g all the way with avcs heads, it will be a brilliant drive nice early spool and plenty of power top end more than 18g. For that kind of buget you can also get a second hand md321t which is also great on newage car and will make one rapid road car with good spool.

my 20G made 419.5 with some meth and that was on sti4 heads mapped by un-ink

What spec do you have on yours mate and what does it make?

scoobydog63 08 February 2010 04:19 PM

any one else got either a 18g or 20g on a newage?

Turbotits 08 February 2010 06:13 PM

have 18g,650 injectors, aps induction, lateral headers and up-pipe, h+s decat, simtek ecu

Makes around 380bhp

scoobydog63 09 February 2010 04:31 PM

Any one else got any experiance of these turbos on an MY03 STi

davedipster 09 February 2010 05:31 PM

Also have a 03stippp and concidering the 20g....
What else would I need apart from the turbo and remap? so I can put a shopiing list together :)

dipster.

20G makes for a nice road car - lazy when you want it to be lazy but rev it and get boost and it comes alive :D

sti03 md321t 3inch exhaust

shame the scaling of rpm is different but the md321t spools earlier than the 20g did.. this is the same car..

best bhp per buck would be an 18g or 20g.. imho..

399.9! That's ludicrously unfortunate...... if the owner happens to be a "pub tuner"! :lol1: Serious loss of face amongst his fellow peers lol

Jolly Green Monster 09 February 2010 11:13 PM

its my own car Joz.. I use Surrey RR a lot as Charlie will not frig figures and I am happy that a bhp is a bhp there etc.. but yes we were laughing lots when it pulled 399.9 and thought it amusing to stop there.

I also ran the car with the md321T and the same 2.5exhaust and first run on a medium boost map I had slung on to use the car it pulled 399.9 again.. most bizarre.. went on to make 416bhp and the above 451bhp is just a swap to 3inch exhaust and a map tweak.

Simon, have you mapped both 18g's and 20g's on a 2.0L with the lowly v.1/2 WRX heads? Did the 20g make any more meaningul bhp? Would you say the 18g's keener spool would be of more benefit on this engine spec, on the road?

Any graphs showing a comaprison for the above examples, at all?

joz8968 09 February 2010 11:23 PM

lol didn't realise it was yours - certainly no pub tuner! ;)

I rather prefer 399.9 to, say, 401 :D

mapped many of both.

I would say the 18g would make a better road car on the wrx heads.

I don't really keep graphs of customers cars.. but possibly should as it may help sometimes although numbers are only half the story.

Simon

joz8968 09 February 2010 11:30 PM

I expect, on a good day, the 20g will prob only make 10-20bhp more, if lucky, as those heads can do weird things from around 380, can't they?

As you say not alll about the numbers.

Jolly Green Monster 09 February 2010 11:40 PM

yes they can.. usually power dies at the top.

Simon

joz8968 10 February 2010 12:43 AM

You, API, harvey, dynamix and Zen all recommend the 18g as being ideal for that set-up - so mind's well and truly made up now! Thanks. :)

Delta Dash figures 406bhp 369Lbsft on 97 ron fuel and 3ml per litre NF. Dont feel the need to stick it on a rolling road as there are only 3 here in NI and all the results vary massively.

Well happy with the way the car goes, however went for a wee spin in Simons car with the T on it and regret that. Its going to cost me more money lol, the T is much crisper so thats a future upgrade also changing the bottom end to a 2.2.

Bang for Buck has to be a TD of sorts, check out Harvey Smiths prices, BNIB 18G for around £650

simon would the "t" be alright on my car its a newage v7 sti i have a 20g on at the moment and due a remap next month my engine is standard if it will cope with the upgrade then i would get one cheers

Jolly Green Monster 11 February 2010 09:25 AM

Yes done many on the T.

The v7 engine produces slightly less power than the v8 blob and the 05 blob seems to be slightly better still I want to disect heads on all three but I think the changes they made to the 05 sti make it best.

Anyway.. yes it will take the T with no issue. Running a T on my daily driver sti8 standard untouched engine and it is driver hard daily.

Out of interest, does the 2.5 inch exhaust have a sports cat?

I have have a MY02 STI with AndyF TD05-20G, Harvey's ported headers and a Power Engineering 2.5 inch exhaust system with sports cat. Car produced ~350/350 when mapped by AndyF. Andy thought the cat was quite restrictive.

How much of an improvement could I expect by removing the cat? I assume another remap would be required?

Cheers, Mark

@ Simon, yes i remember, you ordered the 3in in the car park lol, have to get another run out in her with the new power, just to confirm im making the right choice lol:lol1:

@ Dark, full decat on JGM,s car when it was 2.5 and still is with the 3in.

dipster.

I'd look at getting the headers & up-pipe ported & wrapped while you're swapping out the turbo.

Also consider wrapping the downpipe and changing the spark plugs for colder NGK PFR7B's.
