Speeding over 100mph

Guys,

Until last night I always thought being caught at over 100mph was an instant ban?

Anyone see the NI Traffic cops program - I only caught the tail end of it?
Some guy was doing 122mph, but was officially caught at 103mph
was given 3 points I think and a fine?

Seen the program myself, thought it was very good.
Maybe we should ask Brocks, as he was the one chasing him at 120mph !!

Always thought aswell that over 100mph it was an automatic ban.

I might try and find it tonight on the iPlayer

always used to be a ban, then a police super intendant got caught at 104.3 and they gave him 6 points and a fine, and since then its been going lower and lower

I got caught at 110 going under Antrim bridges. bike cop was hIding up onramp. He went over car for 30 mins looking for anything. I got sent to court and received 6 points and a £450 fine for the speeding, number plates and tinted windows. I had to beg the judge not to ban me and employed a solicitor/ barrister to represent me. Judge said the not getting banned was marginal and based on otherwise clean record.

Far as I know 120 can mean jail term never mind a ban. And do all scoobys howl at over 115 coz my last 3 all do?!

urban 02 February 2010 02:23 PM

Howl?

You mean like the noise you get if you blow across a bottle?

If so then thats just wind noise on the door seal, put the window down a tiny bit and it'll go away
Can also happen at any speed.

Geds 02 February 2010 03:26 PM

This howl comes from the bonnet area. It's a little like blowing over a bottle - on steriods. Sounds amazing and comes in about 115-120 and stays. I think it's airflow through the engine compartment or wheel arches my 02 wrx, 02 sti and more recently the 07 sti have all done it. Let's u know to back off:nono:

there are some dump valves that can cause the noise you describe. I think they partly open at certain speeds that gives the noise you mention.

Be aware the over the limit tolerances have been reduced in NI - you are potentially more likely to get a tug where you may not have before. 100 on any public road is just asking for trouble.

i heard anything up to 15mph over, no interest. 15 - 30mph over 3points and £60. 30mph over speed limit means a summons. can any psni members confirm if this is still in force in NI

barnes_2k7 07 February 2010 12:51 AM

went past a slip road doing 115 and when they put the lights on i was caught at 97 i think, this is going back a year ago on the m6/ m42 was let off with an almighty bollocking and alot of yes sir sorry sir. but kept me my licence, was my lucky day. let me go at road side

Can officially neither confirm nor deny the PSNI's current tolerances on a public forum.....;)

But lets just say when they change in a very short period (was supposed to be 1/2/10) that the new tolerances will be considerably lower than those posted above.....

They are then going to drop again in the next 12 - 18 months to bring the PSNI into line with ACPO guidelines in the UK which are the well publicised 10% + 2 mph....

I got caught doing what was approx 130 on the speedo BUT they were in an unmarked car and not on official duty

They didnt have had a calibration certificate (didnt seem to know what that was) and I would have got away with a lower speed

I was expecting to be summoned but it never occured and after 6 months i briethed a sigh of relief as after that point they can do nothing

It got me into reading and I actually saw that I could increase my speed to just under 110 mph without the 1 year ban and automatic test retake for 'dangerous driving'

These rules seemed to have changed several years ago as I always thought over 100 was pushing it (meaning 110 in reality as speedo tends to overstate nearly 10% anyway - especially when you check with Road Angel)

There is never an instant ban as it can take months to go to caught and you can drag it out by saying 'you wont attend' - I went through all this over 10 years ago so know.. I said I would not attend and they said I had to attend for a possible ban case...
