Thinking about importing parts into the UK from my current home here in Japan

I hope this is OK to post here. I am not a trader but am thinking of making the most of my time here in Japan and buying a few bits (used and new) to make a little bit of cash/get some cheap parts for people.

Any ideas what things may be popular?
The first thing that came to my mind were small/high value like Defi guages, Boost controllers etc.

Probably just doing one a month or so.
Could anyone PM me their thoughts or reply to the thread would be fine.
I was thinking paypal would be the way to go as far as receiving money - better then international bank transfer?
Would you guys be happy to pay in full once the items price has been confirmed or just a deposit? Would linking to my ebay account *ie pay deposit through a special buy-it now, add some feeling of security for people (over a hundred positive feedback, long-standing member.)

Thanks guys.

When I was in Japan last year, the exchange rate was sh1te, so buying anything, car related or not, was only slightly cheaper if not more expensive than buying it then the UK. What you might be able to do is source some JDM only parts, that would be a better idea.

cyrusgod 01 February 2010 12:31 PM

Thanks mate, good feedback. Things can be quite pricey out here..

FauxSTi 01 February 2010 12:41 PM

Remember anything over £17.50 in value also incurs import duties/handling fees.

cyrusgod 01 February 2010 01:43 PM

FauxSTi - does that include used items or just new?
I seem to remember Nengun or another company not shipping in boxes even new items which may have been to "help" with that issue ;-)

DJ_Jon 01 February 2010 01:53 PM

You would have to put a value on what ever you are shipping, even marking things as a "gift" isn't going to gaurantee plain sailing through customs.

cyrusgod 01 February 2010 01:58 PM

Damn those cunning customs officers!

JDM Bugeye STi headlights! Seriously, if you want to know, research on here what people are after, find out how m uch they go for in Japan, work out delivery and taxes on top, draw up an itemized price and post it on here. Pretty soon youll get a good idea if people think its a good price or not.

Sounds like a lot of work (not the research part.. we all do that if we are addicted to scoobynet anyway!) for a bit of pocket money but I may well give it a go.
Cheers all!

I've been after (and know of quite a few others) a set of rear spats for a blobeye/hawkeye rear bumper for ages.
They seem to be popular in the States and in Japan but are VERY rare here in the UK, and also rarely come up on ebay. Have only seen a handful of UK newages sporting them.

So if you were to be able to get hold of any of these, then drop me a PM. I'd be happy to pay through Paypal.

JDM Newage Saloon Wind Deflectors!

so hard to get hold of them over here except from main dealers at a high price..

FauxSTi 01 February 2010 03:58 PM

You can put whatever value you like on the contents, especially on used parts, but you can only insure it for the value stated on the customs form. It's swings and roundabouts I guess, risk of loss vs savings on the import duties.

Internet hugs to belliott for spreading word of my strut brace plight!

As has been said I'm after a genuine STi rear strut brace for my blob-eye and, having tried just about everywhere in the UK (and parts of Europe!) that I can think of, I've run out of places to look.

My only option is to ship one from Japan, but the only site that offers such a service want to do me up the behind in postage charges. If someone were to offer a reasonable import service from Japan where I could converse with someone in English I'd happily use it...

The_Dark_Avenger 01 February 2010 09:31 PM

id be after jdm wind deflectors for a blob saloon

DJ_Jon 01 February 2010 09:35 PM

Wind deflectors for a classic would be good actually

fmp 01 February 2010 09:42 PM

Wind deflectors... as in the parts easily purchased from a main dealer for approx £75?

You would have to pay more than that for postage from Japan for them... and let us not forget that they are just plastic, so would have to be well packaged to survive!

But... back on topic, i buy most of my stuff from Japan, as most places over here offering bits and pieces dont usually hold much stock. So its quicker to order from Japan myself, as 99% of the time it ends up cheaper too (with postage and import taxes).

I mainly use JDM Parts and Racing Accessories direct from Japan: RHDJapan.com
