Exhaust help needed for a numpty

Hi
Car went for MOT today and failed on exhaust and brake discs. Brake discs not a problem and I will fit new pads and discs all round.
Exhaust is leaking, appears there are some holes and cracks in it, it is a standard subaru exhaust with twin tail pipe on a 1996 WRX wagon. It was on the car when I bought it,
My question is, I want to buy a new exhaust for it but have confused myself (not hard!) with cat backs, de cats, 3",4" etc. All I want is a new exhaust that will pass an MOT on emissions and noise, If it makes more power will I have to re-map? ideally I want to avoid that as funds aren't that forthcoming.
Just wondering if I have a choice besides another genuine subaru system.
Many thanks, any help appreciated.

All depends on what part it is you need mate. If the holes and cracks are in the rear section you can pick up back boxes at reasonable prices. Look on here.

Cobra Sport - Subaru Impreza Turbo WRX / STI (1994-2000) Aftermarket Performance Exhaust

Classics have three main sections of exhaust. Down-pipe, cente section with cat convertor and rear section. Really need to know where the burst pipe is.

I did ask at the test place, back box has a hole. He said the other leak was under a shield so couldn't see. Not a great help but it is just a test centre not a repair place.
On mine there is a sensor on the down pipe from the turbo, just around where it bends level with the floor (it's also very large at this point!) center section is just a pipe with a wider part in it but no leads so I assume its a silencer?
then it goes onto rear box with two (tiny :lol1:) pipes comining off that.
The exhaust has subaru stamped in big letters all over it, so if I fit a new back box will they mate up to the standard stuff?
Sorry for the questions, but just want to be sure before I buy anything.

The standard system from front to back has a 2.5" bore so whatever you buy, be it downpipe, which is the one with the lambda sensor you mentioned, centre section which has a cat convertor with heat shield, or back box, the part you need must also be a 2.5" bore. Sounds like you need centre section and rear box mate.
