Turbocharger Change VF43 or VF48?

I have an S202 which after a recent remap by Bob Rawle :notworthy which is achieving 348 bhp/338 lbs/ft torque - but as has happened some many times before I now find myself wanting more power. :brickwall

Now the car has already been partly modified as it has a full 3" exhaust system with a 100 cell sports cat, TSL Hybrid Green air filter and an Ecutek remap. :)

I am looking at changing the VF34 turbo for either a VF43 or 48 depending on best bhp/torque output, plus I am also looking at fitting ported headers and up-pipe or would sending them off for porting be just as good? :wonder:

In short which turbo would be better (or suggest a different turbo capable of up to 400bhp) and what bhp/torque figures do you think would be feasible and ported headers or send away for porting?

Ive got a vf35 with 650cc injectors, fmic and ecutek remap and on the the dyno we got 399.6bhp, 316.2bhp at the wheels. And not much lag either! :)

im running the standard vf43 on my RB320 with green filter,3 inch 100 cell sports cat mated to the nurspec r, recently made 376bhp and 410 ft/lb of torque, martin at enginetuner reckoned with forged pistons he could get the car to piss 400bhp

399bhp fromn a VF35 and 400bhp from a VF43 on vpower ?

Wow, there's some fancy 'sooped up' dynos around these days :D

376bhp im running andy not 400bhp just stated what i was told when it was mapped

Anyone able to answer my questions? :wonder: :p :wonder:

Ported headers will help, whether you fit an exchange set or have your own ported should see the same results. The change will be subtle though and the power and torque will ultimately determined by the turbo itself.
I wouldn't expect to see anything over 380bhp on the VF43. TD05-20G is usually around 30 bhp ahead of the average VF43 however 380 isn't an average VF43, with the range typically 345-375bhp, the 20G averaging 370-400bhp.
To guarantee 400bhp you would be looking at a Garrett hybrid of sorts.

Andy.

Thanks Andy, so it looks like it is not worth changing the vf34 for a vf43/48 after all and I would be better off looking for a Garrett turbo. :notworthy

The VF48 flows more than the VF43 - that could well be 360-390bhp if supporting mods are there. More than a VF34 - depending on how much you can pick up a VF48 for and how much you can sell your VF34 for it could prove an economic and worthwhile upgrade.

Greg320's car didn't just make 376bhp and 410lbft, it made it easily at not much boost at all. I suggested based on this that with some good supporting mods it might be possible to make 400hp from a built motor on decent boost.
I in no way suggested that it would be guarenteed, but more that it would be an interesting test

The mods are as above but I would fit a Walbro 255 pump, induction kit (if required), uprated injectors (probably 650cc flow matched) and ported headers/up-pipe.

There is a vf48 for sale on eBay but it has damaged impellor blades so tbh i would only consider it after a rebuild had been carried out.

It could be a fairly inexpensive way of getting close enough to my goal. :notworthy

I have seen it myself and it was in great condition apart from the blades but pretty difficult to say exactly what impact that would have on its performance or reliability - perhaps a turbo expert might give you some firm advice on it.

I have PM'd the seller (I sold him an STi roof spoiler) who I think you mapped for a while back, I am going to contact a couple of turbo reconditioners tomorrow to get prices for a new impellor shaft/blades and balancing. :notworthy
