What happens at the end of the Iraq enquiry?
OK so its good to have an inquest etc, and get people to justify their actions.
But what is the outcome to be? If its a matter of deeming legal/illegal, then does this mean someone could take a fall and end up in prison? Or that people will get called names, and then give Iraq compensation and forget all about it? I have been watching some of the coverage, but was not sure what the true goal was. Anyone? |
they'll have some tea and scones?:thumb:

Nothing will happen. Nothing will be learnt from it.
They'll make further cuts to the Armed Forces and then they'll make up another entirely farcical reason for us to invade a large Gulf or Far Eastern Nation utilising a small knife and an old Metro they picked up for £120 on Ebay. Then the Pigeon Fancier who is masquerading as somehow being remotely qualified to be the Secretary of State for Defence will claim that that the casualties were completely unexpected by everyone - except presumably all the members of the Armed Forces who were actually very aware they didn't have the right body armour, and in all probability with how things are going - a gun; and all the other people who said that it was a stupid &^%£ing idea; but were ignored because their opinion didn't tie into the pre-agreed policy of crawling up the arse of whichever US President happens to be in power this week. :) |
yours truely will get the bill for it all , and the rest will get swept under the carpet
|
Just about sums up my expectations too then.
So there are no plans to prosecute anyone for any sort of crime like, telling porkies to rage war or anything like that then? Hmmph! So in reality watching Blair and Brown is just going to be another display of smug grins, and avoidances of the questions. (although I do enjoy watching each person be told to stop waffling and answer the damn question) I reckon the outcome will be Dr Kelly being blamed for false information and them saying he took the easy way out. Or some rediculous story like that. |
nothing will come of it, its just "Jobs for the boys"...
|
Minor criticisms of procedure will be made to make it look as though the enquiry has been totally unbiased of course. There will be a lot of fudging as well so that the real fails get lost somewhere and no one person will have any blame heaped upon him.
That is more or less what went on with the other ones anyway. It will be interesting to see how this one actually goes. Les |
Sounds about right Les. Would be nice to see someone take a fall if so called for though eh.
Name shame and blame. Some of the sessions have shown some weaknesses in the loyalties that people believed existed. Suddenly Blair/Brown dont seem so close. Jack Straw's evidence was interesting, as was Campbell's What will the 2 big B's have to say about eachother, and will it match? |
Frequently asked questions
There's the official answer which, as far as I can tell, is basically as described above. |

Sums it up nicely eh....
The outcome Will the Inquiry say whether anybody involved in the Iraq conflict should face criminal charges? Will it be able to apportion blame? The Inquiry is not a court of law. The members of the Committee are not judges, and nobody is on trial. But if the Committee finds that mistakes were made, that there were issues which could have been dealt with better, it will say so. |

Les :( I wonder where we would be today if he had been able to speak freely, and say everything he had to say. To think that all this digging and expense is going to be wrapped up with the marking of a test card, and the grading of the actions of the people involves is rediculous. |
Of course something will happen......
There will be several MBE's, OBE's Knighthoods etc Our Government will spend thousands on the case Our Government will send thousands of pounds in compensation to Iraq (nb for 'our Government' read you & me) America will still get cheap oil & spend a quarter of what we do on fuel Many, many parents, brothers, sisters & children of servicemen will learn that their loved ones were killed or maimed for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Doesn't it make you proud to be British? |
As I mentioned before, I thought it was significant that after the Iraq war was officially over, the first priority was to repair the damaged oil wells!
Les  |

Good point Les. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking his 'suicide' was quite mysterious and sinister. Blair needs bringing to task, Campbell needs bringing down a peg. Infact the whole thing stinks to high heaven!
As for Dr Kelly, its one of the first times I have ever looked at something and thought immediatly, HOW obvious is it that its a cover up! Im not bothered about the policitics, which party etc, I just think it stinks that his family can be put through that, when its quite clear that he was taken out. As for the oil wells, the yanks will be on it like a rash! Just as soon as its safe. Scooby Blue, good summary mate :thumb: So we all agree, its a waste of money! |

Agreed, but like most things, the people involved will be completely immune from any kind of penalty :( Which is quite rediculous when you think how the same people pursue others they believed have raged illegal wars, and carried out inhumane acts. .....
Saw this *poem* on Guido's blog which quite succinctly sums up the whole sorry Iraq mess. Go see .... Pill Popping Bad Al Campbell Depressed by Gordon - Guy Fawkes' blog .... comment #14, but here it is: Nick Drew says: January 25, 2010 at 11:01 am Usual apologies to Edward Lear They went to war in a Sieve, they did, In a Sieve they went to war: In spite of all Hans Blix could say, At Bush’s command on that fateful day In a Sieve they went to war! But when no weapons were found in the place And every one cried, “You have no case” Said Blair and Brown “we’re trusting to luck” We don’t care a button! we don’t give a f***! In a Sieve we’ll go to war!’ Far and few, far and few, Are the scruples of Brown and Blair; Their lies are bold and they’re shameless too, And they went to war in a Sieve. They went to war in a Sieve, they did And totally unprepared With not enough armour for soldiers to don With too few choppers – the list it goes on But Brown, he never cared. And every one said, who saw them go, `O won’t they be soon undone, you know! For the list of shortcomings is terribly long, And happen what may, it’s extremely wrong To send our boys unprepared!” Far and few, far and few, Are the scruples of Brown and Blair… The casualty figures soon started to rise, The coffins they soon came in; So to cover their arses they lied and lied (No sign of remorse for the many who died) And they gave the order to spin! And they hunkered down at Number 10 And they lied and they spun and they lied again ”Though the charges against us be ever so long Yet we’ll never admit we were rash or wrong. While we have breath, we spin!” Far and few, far and few, Are the scruples of Brown and Blair … It should be plastered across the entrance to No. 10 and over *all* of Billy Liar's houses/mansions! The Tories should use it in their election campaign. Dave |
records will be sealed for 70 years till those with a direct input into the enquiry are dead

Hutton, thats spot on mate, good find!
Just about sums up the whole thing. Neil, I thought that was just for the Kelly enquiry? |

Good one Dave-should be widely publicised.

Ultimately the fault lay with the man at the top, cut to the chase and declare Blair a war criminal! If Blair then wants to shift blame to any of his collegeues to clear his name, he should do so at his own expense.
I personally want to know how much tax payer's money was spent on designing that fancy "Q" lettering used for the "IRAQ INQUIRY" logos (http://www.iraqinquiry.org.uk/media/...iry-header.gif). |
Ali, you and me alike mate. Seems there are always fancy backdrops etc in these things, which aint gonna be cheap. Rediculous also.
At the end of the day, Mugabe is held responsible for what his barmy army did, killing the masses. As was Saddam.... So why should Blair be different if the hearing finds the war illegal? I dont get it. Maybe is DOES need to be a courtroom now. Interesting witnesses today though. 1 has already called it illegal, and the current one resigned just before we went to war based on her feelings about it all. |
