Ebay Question

I sold an item via ebay yesterday and it was bought with the buy it now option.
Problem is the buyer only registered himself yesterday and has zero feedback, now having one past experience of this before and being then hit for a chargeback through PayPal when the buyer recieved the item and I had proof of delivery with Royal Mail Special Delivery.
Is there anyway I can Cancel this transaction and refund the buyer his money as I dont want to risk going through all the hassle again.

TIA

Snazy 21 January 2010 07:17 PM

Not really unless you can prove they are a wrongun.

Snazy 21 January 2010 07:18 PM

Best bet, depending what the item is, is to say its broken and refund anything they pay, and let ebay know its no longer available.

Thats what i would do, had that problem and paypal held the money for over 6 weeks because he was a new member

Money is already in my PayPal account,is just I dont want to be messed around like the last time when the guy recieved the item and sent me an email to confirm this, then a week later claimed he never got it and applied for a chargeback throug PayPal.
The guy that bought maybe genuine enough but alarm bells started ringing when he was only registered yesterday on ebay.

Just a thought...everybody on Ebay had zero feedback when they first started.
You've got to start somewhere.

M444GY 22 January 2010 10:07 AM

ask the guy for a number and ring him

I always put in the description that anyone with less than 5 feedback should contact first. Then if they buy you have no obligation to sell.

Yes.

But if he's selling what I think then we're talking hundreds of pounds as opposed to a few quid.

What you need to do is send it recorded delivery and then you put the tracking code into paypal as soon as you have sent it and then everyone can follow it and know when it gets delivered.

Send it special delivery or parcelforce not recorded (waste of money!), and as long as its a confirmed and verified address in paypal you should be ok.

Snazy 22 January 2010 10:59 AM

Refund him and ask him to transfer the money or send you a postal order or something maybe? Do it where chargebacks are not possible.

Only had one done on me in all these years, and it had NOTHING to do with the buyer, but paranoid, we are gonna hold your money Paypal instead.

DAZ6151 22 January 2010 11:01 AM

I own an ebay shop and have occasionally sold an item out of stock and just say that my dog as he is a doberman puppy came in last night and chewed it to bits lol.
Does depend how big the item is though.

DAZ6151 22 January 2010 11:02 AM

why is recorded a waste of money?? I send all mine special but thats because they are small items worth alot. If its not worth much then send it recorded.

Snazy 22 January 2010 11:07 AM

Recorded is not suitable proof to win a Paypal dispute on if you read their fine print. It has to be trackable as well as have a signature available. For which Royal Mail will charge you for too! Even though you have paid for the service already. Mugs!

DAZ6151 22 January 2010 11:09 AM

recorded is trackable AND you have to sign for it thats why its called recorded?

DAZ6151 22 January 2010 11:11 AM

if its abroad your sending it then send it international singned for and insured.

We send out about 100 parcels a day mixture of freight/parcelforce/royal mail, so know just about all the ins and outs of postal and parcel delivery.

Recorded (orange sticker) goes in with all regular mail, so when the thieving posties are looking through the bags they can think to themselves

"a bright orange sticker that must mean something valuable inside"

The postie is supposed to get a signature when they deliver it but normally they cant be bothered so when you try to track that item online it will say something like "come back later" and it will never update. The items have no tracking the label only means that they are supposed to get a signature so they always get "lost".

DAZ6151 22 January 2010 11:36 AM

Wow i didnt know that as it gives you a tracking number? So this is just to check if it has been signed for at the other end? Good to know.

As soon as you add insurance to international signed for you will be talking mega bucks! better to send with a courier DHL/PARCELFORCE etc if its really important, normally cheaper if you use somone like Parcel2go

DAZ6151 22 January 2010 11:45 AM

Nope not the items i sell which are computer programs Royal mail is by far the cheapest unless its worth more than £500 or is heavier than 2kg which mine never are.

As long as they are not worth more than about £35, then normal Royal Mail post is the best way with out the signed for option. Luckily we don't have to keep proof of posting for parcels so claiming on Royal Mail insurance for all of the lost parcels is quite easy.

scubbay 22 January 2010 12:37 PM

Use the paypal postage label. It really is good value and up to 30kg is £10.99 parcelforce48. Fully trackable through paypal so reasonably foolproof.

Correct, the tracking number is useless. Only gets a signature at the other end. A signature you then have to pay then to release to you.

Recorded, just said important and watching. Nothing else.

First worth while level is Special Delivery which is a big jump in cost, but better insured and trackable.

International as said, best option is through one of the bigger carriers, DHL, Fedex, UPS which is properly trackable.

Have contacted him a few hours after he bought it asking him to send a postal order if I refund his PayPal payment and as yet no reply, which doesnt help matters.

We'll Davy that response probably says it all sadly :(

Aaron1978 22 January 2010 11:37 PM

Just withdraw the money to your bank account, paypal can't chargeback money if there is none in your paypal account (as far as i'm aware). If i sell something to someone that has no feedback to them being trustworthy ie new etc i'll tell them i'm not posting until its transferred to my bank due to the amount of fraud thats about. If their trustworthy they'll agree to this if their not happy give them the option of their money back, simple.

Just to add there was a member on here recently who was getting stick for not sending an item that was won due to whatever reason. Now you should have blocked bidders with less than 5 feedback if you didn't want this scenario, the guy thinks he has won something fair and square which he has so i'd say make sure the money is in your account (bank) and then post it to the guy. I understand your worry but you shoud send.

Exactly! Was just about to mention that. paypal cannot take money from your bank account. Come to think about it, I dont think they can take the cash from credit card either. They can only take the cash back if your paypal account is in credit.

The Rig 23 January 2010 09:17 AM

Unless they take it from your paypal account which can have a balance of £0.00 which then makes your account say -£51.99 then paypal chase your Arse for the cash, which i think is the case now
