How to connect to my99 ECU

Hello everyone,

I am new here, and I have a question, Hope someone can help.
I have MY99, GC8.
I saw that there is a dongle to connect to some impreza models
using the OBD2 protocol.
Unfortunately, if I understood correctly, my car doesn't support
this type.
What are my options to connect my ecu to a laptop [in addition, is there a bluetooth solution?]
and which software also supports my car.

p.s My ECU is prodrive ECU.

Thank you very much,

Kfir Bar.

Your car supports the ISO9141 electrical part of the OBD2 standard but not the OBD2 data communication format.

As such, to connect your laptop to it, you need a bare ISO-compatible (aka vag.com compatible) interface and some select monitor compatible software - like DeltaDash, RomRaider's logger or EcuExplorer.

Thank you for your fast reply :)

Today I tried to plug a dongle that support ODB2 and I used my friend software
(don't remember its name) which is not compatible with my car, but
The program received transmitted data from my car [and could not interpret it to a meaningful data].
My question is that means that if I use this dongle with compatible software
like EcuExplorer that I just downloaded, can it work?

Thanks again,

Kfir Bar.

Without knowing what sort of dongle you used, it's clearly impossible to give you a solid answer to that question. The only thing you can do is try it and see.

What would be the correct cable/software to be able to read and reset codes for a my99 (Sti5)

If all you want to do is read error codes and reset the ECU, you don't need any software/cables for that, just the black plugs under the dash for reading memory, and black + green for resetting.

The advantage of an external diagnostic interface is that you can look at real time performance data from the ECU as well as the errors. If you want to do that, the answer's exactly as I gave to Kfir in post #2. DeltaDash is commercial software/hardware, the other two are free to download.
