New 5 series

Looks nice, more sleek than then E60. The 530d will do 0-60 in 6.3s, no details on a 535d as yet. I presume they'll make one, or have they ditched it?

New M5 rumoured to have a twin turbo V8, 560 BHP and a twin clutch gearbox

Looks very smart and business like, but a bit plain compared to the outgoing model!

The german brands need to calm down a bit on the power-race tho! 560bhp M5 will be crazy, but the current 500bhp model is already that!

i had the outgoing M5...believe me 500 is not enough compare to my 460bhp P1,
reason been that the M5 is a very heavy car so needs the extra bhp.

the new F10 M5 is class though , interior is very well design , not sure on the V8 twin turbo , as the current V10 is a awesome engine !!

Pete, it looks a little plain, but then so does a vanilla 520d. When its in a nice colour like black, with larger wheels, and at some point a M Tech body styling kit I think it will look aggressive but still subtle.

The current V10 engine is nice but lacks a little low end torque, hopefully the twin turbo will sort that out. Blurb on the net says it will have aluminium doors/bonnet, thinner glass and a carbon fibre roof. If this means weight has actually dropped, that's great news.
Still can't figure out why there is no 535d showing on the bmw website

Might be rebadged the 540d (like the 740d)? Uses a single twin scroll turbo but otherwise very similar.

I like it.

The new E92 (3 coupe) has been previewed as well - that looks worse and has HUGE wing mirrors - a bit like a Landcruiser!

Dingdongler 18 January 2010 02:04 PM

Matee, are you saying the 535d/540d has been announced, because I can't seem to find it anywhere?

The new 530d is quoted as 0-60 in 6.3s which could make the 535d perhaps sub 6secs, once chipped maybe 5.5secs? Now that would make a fantastic 'sensible' car.

Matteeboy 18 January 2010 04:01 PM

Ding - nope, I'm just guessing. But most "in the know" are pretty sure the 40d engine will make it into the 5 then probably the 3 series.

Only thing is, it's not actually much more powerful and the torque is only a wee bit higher. A remao gets much better results.

Think the main reason for it is lower emissions and mpg.

Not sure about the 5 series but a lots of 35d engined 3 series cars (all shapes) have been times at around 5.5s to 60 despite BMWs official times of 5.9 (Coupe), 6 (saloon) and 6.1 (Touring). The 35i times are even more impressive to 60 - just about 5 seconds dead for some tests.

Makes a change from manufacturers making OTT claims - the E36 M3, B7 RS4 and Audi 3.0TDi spring to mind. All have BS "official" power and performance figures.

Thanks.

Why do you say that the 35d/40d is only marginally more powerful than the 30d? Its 245 vs 285 BHP, 40 BHP is quite a difference. Or have I misunderstood you?

Matteeboy 18 January 2010 04:33 PM

Ding - misunderstood! The 40d unit is only marginally more powerful (just over 300bhp) than the 35d unit and based on the same block. Most BMW fans would assume it's an 8 pot diesel from the 40i engines of the past.

Latest 30d unit isn't far off the 35d unit and you can have a manual so that appeals more to some. I just like the lack of any "gap" in power from the twin turbos myself. The auto box works very well too. A diesel auto estate that's fun - doesn't seem right but it is!

New 5er looks good. I like it a lot.

Gotcha:thumb:

I have the current 5 series and like it alot. The new one looks better imho, I'd quite like to change my car towards the end of the year or early 2011. However, I never buy brand new cars and as they haven't announced the 540d touring or M5 saloon yet, I won't be able to buy a year old one for some time yet.

I can imagine a white M5 with the carbon fibre roof will look amazing:luvlove:
