JonMc 17 January 2010 09:19 AM

I've just got some Mobil super S, slightly cheaper and you get 5ltrs rather than 4 so you don't need to by a 1ltr bottle to go with it:D

dj219957 17 January 2010 11:10 AM

ive used it, no problems

andyxros 17 January 2010 01:09 PM

i used it an spun a bearing now i dont use it,,, motul 300v only from now on
it was a hot day and was only hard driving for a matter of minuets if that, then the start up in the morning got a rattle and rattled at 2500 revs

Depends on how many miles are on the engine and how it's mostly gonna be used.

The most widely used oils for the EJ flat-4 seem to be (in no particular order):

* Millers CFS 10W-40... or 10W-50 (new one just out! - to compete with Pro S below)
* Silkolene Pro S 10W-50
* Motul 300V Competition 15W-50

In that sense, Castrol Magnatec is not a widely used oil from what I've so far gleaned from these forums.

I reckon if you were to ask Oilman for a recommendation, he'd point you to Pro S 10W-50 for a 1994 turbo.

BLACK V5 17 January 2010 02:44 PM

I use shell helix. Its what subaru dealers use.

Bob Rawle 17 January 2010 09:41 PM

Don't use the Magnatec, its not suitable for a turbo car, tends to suffer degradation from turbo temperatures and, as mentioned above, that leads to bottom end failure, do a search it well documented on this bbs, not recommended.

Shell Helix Ultra is one I would recommend and is the oil I use.

cheers

bob

ship! iv got this in mine... when i was looking at oils it said subaru impreza on it? so thought why not?

think il change it before i fire it back up. piece of mind n all that

why do people tend to go for a 10/15w 50 over 10w/40

joz8968 20 January 2010 12:44 AM

50 is a thicker viscosity when at high temps, compared to a 40. So is ideal if you drive your car hard and for long periods e.g. a trackday. So these driver types will invariably opt for a 50 over a 40. That said, a 10W-40 is a perfectly suitable grade for everyday mixed driving on the roads.

I happen to have CFS 10W-40 in at the mo. But next oil change, will move to Pro S 10W-50 (Oilman's recommendation for my fresh build) - this will coincide in getting mapped to around 350-370 (hopefully!).

Anyone know what SWRT used to use in their WRC car? Was it a non-commercial, specially formulated blend (at great cost) of the Shell Helix brand? What was the grade?

Previous gen. WRC Imprezas used to run Motul livery, I noticed - did they actually use it though?! If so, again, would it have been a non-commercial product, though?

"Ahoy there, me hearties!" ;)... How many knots can your car do, etc, etc.... :Whatever_

wrighty338 20 January 2010 02:12 AM

0 :D

JonMc 20 January 2010 07:51 AM

I used the super S for my oil change on Monday, and the car seemed just that little bit quieter. It had been a little rattle at the top end prior to that, now it's sweet. Went from Pro-S 10W-50 to Mobil Super S 10W-40:thumb:

I dont know what the SWRT car was running but I very much doubt it will be a special brew, even some formula one cars have run "off the shelf" oil.

The Motul Impreza WRC according to Motul did use off the shelf 300v products and gear oils. We even have a poster thingy here that shows what Motul fluid was used where and they are all available to buy. However... Last time I met with Redline they claimed to be supplying the Subaru WRC team despite the Motul stickers and at full cost. Who knows.

Cheers

Guy

Cheers Guy.

It sort of gives mere mortals like me 'heart' when you know professional motorsport teams use 'off the shelf' products - the ones who have no promotional agenda, that is! It goes some way in vindicating our purchases, and quashing any cynical thoughts like, "Are we actually being sold a 'lie' here (just so the manufacturers can make an easy buck, etc.)...?" :(

:D ;)

PeeVee 20 January 2010 02:42 PM

If you own a Wrc car then Prodrive would currently supply you with an off the shelf product: Motul 300v 75/90
