RAC Trackstar/Traffic Master Problems

Been having problems with my Tracker for a while. It's been failing to go into sleep mode and subsequently if the car's been left for more than 5-6 days then the battery will be dead (Not just in the cold weather but even happened in the middle of summer when i went away for a week)

I contacted Traffic Master (who now run the RAC Trackstar) and enquired how I should go about getting the problem sorted. I received an email back from them saying that they would send an engineer out to fix it.

Wait for it.......At the cost of £120 + Parts!!!!! :nono:

Surely as i'm already paying the 4 yearly payments for keeping the Tracker active they should sort it FOC ???

I've sent another email to them stating my thoughts on the matter ;)

a bit steep i think, but if its under a year from purchace you should get it fixed foc if not try and find a local trackstar dealer and see what they say!

I haven't bothered renewing my trackstar.
I am not that interested in getting it back if it's knicked and the insurance weren't interested in it either.

When I got my new car it had an RAC Trackstar, rang them to see if I could get it transferred to my name, apparently it wasn't working. Then had to ring another 0870 number which kept me on hold for 5 minutes then cut me off (several times!) Eventually emailed them explaining that I had tried ringing without being able to get through and could they please ring me (after all I was trying to give them some custom:)) 2 weeks later they deigned to ring back on the very day that my Smartrak was to be fitted.

I wouldn't bother with them, there are alternatives (preferably not Tracker:)), Smartak are a smaller company and according to my installer are pretty good service wise, so far they've been fine every time I've needed to contact them I've got through straight away and they rung me a few times when my battery has been disconnected/totally flat to check that nothing is amiss.

It all cost me quite a lot but I'd arranged the insurance on the basis that the car had a tracking device and didn't really want the hassle of sorting out a different policy. I'll have to see what's available come renewal time.

I had a smartnav system before which was (I think) tied to Traffic Master et al. The head unit (it was a satnav and tracker) failed twice in the warranty period and was replaced FOC. The entire thing failed a few months out of warranty and they wanted £120 to send an engineer to diagnose the fault. Then of course I would need to pay for parts/repair.

I took it to a local car comms specialist who charged me £25 to diagnose the fault and confirmed the entire unit was goosed.

I bought a new system and a chap from this forum fitted it at a very reasonable rate. The company I am with now is Smartrak and they are very good. Not had any problems yet mind you. Spoke to them on set up and they have called me when my battery went flat. They were good both times.
