Smell of fuel
Hi there,
Over the last couple of days I have notice a smell of fuel in the cabin. When the car is started from cold until it is up to temperature (5 mins) there is a smell of fuel in the cabin. Once the engine is warm this smell disappears. I have visually checked to see if I can spot any obvious leaks but have not spotted anything. Any ideas what this could be? Since it disappears when warm is it something to do with cold starting/choke? Is there a diagram available showing the fuel line routing so I can trace aling it and check for any leaks? TIA |
It's a common fault in the early newages. Here's the fix:

Check the line going to the fuel pressure reg. They tend to fray with time, and you get the smell.
Yes the OEM manual does have a fuel line drawing, but you can trace it fairly simply. As you stated the fuel smell in in the passenger compartment when running , so start at the engine bay. Find the fuel filter located on the passenger side strut tower and trace the line from there to the fuel rails and the return hose. |
I get this as well, but mine is an 03 blobeye. Have looked everywhere and can't find a leak. Could I get a slight leak from a slip jointed uppipe until it heats up and seals better.

Thanks very much.
Will probably leave it then unless I need something else doing in that area in the future. Perhaps I should just move somewhere warmer! |
i've bitten the bullet and getting mine fixed next week, its only been doing it for 2 weeks but my last tank of fuel lasted 30-40 miles less than normal. i haven't done any more quick driving than i normally would and my route has been typical of normal as well, so i think its actually losing quite a bit of fuel when its cold (it must be a fair bit after all, the car really does stink for the first 5 minutes!).
Got a quote of £301 all in for the fix - and thats from a Subaru dealer! |
