02 sti front knock
 

hi all i have 02 sti with coilovers(bc) alk,roll centr kit,and i have been geting a clunk or knock on front when taking up drive(when i put the gas on after change gear) the front roll bar and links are oe ones and think im gonna change roll bar bushes as seen better days,just wondered if any one else had any knocks or clunks when putting gas on as most knocks are when going over bumps in road and mine is fine when i go over bumps slow or fast, any thoughts please,(bit long winded but want to give as much info as poss):thumb:

has anyone ever heard of a worn drive shaft (someone said it could be this) on a newage scoobs ? its getting looked at at the weekend but ive gone over bushes before and nothing had excess play,

Sounds like you could have a worn drop link at the front tbf

I'd put money (well 10p anyway) on a loose drive shaft nut. I had clunk click at low speed that drove me mad for a year before I found slightly loose NSF drive shaft nut (32mm). Easy to check, just pop off centre cap in front wheels and see if the nut is still staked in the groove on the shaft.

thanks m8 i think you told me to check this b4 and when i looked it seemed sound to me and had the nut in place with the bit folded in to stop it coming loose.wouldnt the drop links knock over bumps as mine dont,its only when i take up drive,

I agree it doesn't sound like drop links as they will make a lot of noise if loose/worn over mild bumps. Must be some sort of driveshaft problem.

Check that the strut is firmly attached to the top mount, and then see if the top mount is knackered...

cheers for advise,the coilovers are less than a year old and i only do 50 miles a week to work and back so they are almost new,they are bc coilovers and have the pillowball topmounts,had all done at powerstation along with geometry.would they have removed the hub nut when fitting and if so could it be still loose(ish)even tho the indent is in securely on the nut.ive changed to pollybush arb bushes so thats eliminated them.its just when i put on the gas (take up drive)and sometimes when come off gas.all bolts seem tight on top mount and is definately the o/s front.any help please it bugs me and nearest scooby specialist is powerstation and im in bham and i work 6 days a week and have kids (3) thanks for any help.

Changing struts does not require hub (nut) removal. You could try wiggling the drive shafts to see what sort of play there is and compare side to side. Problem with this is that there will be some play anyway and its hard to tell what is OK or not unless you have an obvious difference.

yea thats wot i thought m8, i had quick look at shaft and seems ok with only slight play as with the other side,i think it might not be anything to worry about but you have to check it out cause it might be something bad that could get worse and as i said i have kids in car so safety is number 1,thanks again bud

when i say play in shaft i mean when trying to turn it back and forth the way it rotates,

Try up and down or side to side. Something must be making the noise.

I know its not your whats wrong with your car but when I had my drive shaft nut clonk I knew something was not right and it did need fixing.

will do m8,not got much cash at mo to chuck at it so will be having new front arb and links next month and getting chevron motorsport to redo geometry and ride height(had this done at respectable large scooby garrage,not very good job at all !)so will have them sort it out hopefully,get there in the end.

not to sure if ive got the same problem im gettin a rubbing noise when im driving in a straight line as if theres sumthin rubbing on the wheel with every revolution (if u know wat i mean)..and when driving up my drive whiles turning sounds really creeky thats when its most notcible wernt to sure if it was a bearing but theres no play on the wheel,sum1 said cud be a dry wheel bearing..2004sti passengerside wheel..any suggestions and sumtimes get a clunk when pulling of in the mournings when the cars been left ova night sumtimes this happens too.
