low oil pressure

hi,
on my previous engine on my95 sti, i had low oil pressure, could it have been from not changing the oil cooler thing obove the oil filter? ive been told that it sholud have been changed when doing a rebuild (why is that?) thanks,
phil.

It's normal practice to replace the modene if you've had any kind of failiure that would have resulted in metal swaft being circulated around the engine - bigend bearings, hole in a piston etc.

They are virtually impossible to thoroughly clean all debris from.

Low oil pressure could be down to a number of things - **** oil, bolts on the back of the oil pump coming loose, pressure releif valve sticking, worn bearing shells with clearances that are too wide etc. - If you strip the motor down you may be able to work out why it was low.

i did strip it and couldnt really find anything wrong but it had a bearing faliure on a previous rebuild, this is why i wondered if it could be a clogged modine (thanks for the word modine) could it have been that clogged that it gives low pressure?

I would change it now anyway, along with flushing the motor through with some cheap semi synthetic oil and a new filter, then change again for some decent oil and another new filter - damage llimitation exercise

Impossible to say if any damage has already been done to the new shells etc.

Did you replace / strip, clean and inspect the oil pump when you rebuilt it?

When you say low oil pressure - how low is it at warm idle and at WOT?

ill cut the story of my engines lift short (ish)
when i first got the car it had engine faliure, i stripped it and found a conrod bolt shot through the top of the block look i the picture, the blue circul is where is came through, its right next to the knock sensor,
i took it to be bored out and welded, built it back up and found that it had very low oil pressure,
bare with me, nearly there,
well now im thinking that where the bolt came through on the under side, there was another hole in the line of the oil flow that the engeneerer missed(me too), i have done a line in red from what i think is the oil flow, and if there is a hole in that, it would have very low oil pressure, am i right or totally wrong?

IMO you should throw the block in the bin and start with another one.

thewhitewarrior 31 December 2009 03:33 PM

yes true, could it be the reason though, is the red line right in the picture?

does anyone agree?
