Christmas Day Petrol

I am hoping to drive from near Aberdeen to Cornwall on Christmas Day. I had hoped to do it on Christmas Eve. However I got onshore in Norway too late to get home today.

Will the service stations on the M6 and M5 be open?

moff1888 23 December 2009 07:06 PM

I would expect/hope so seeing as it's not a holiday.

Fair play on that drive I did Cumbernauld to Plymouth and that was boring.

I believe that all motorway service stations have to remain open 24/7 - 365 days of the year

Xmas day is a bank holiday in the UK.

The answer appears to be yes. I bumped into a guy earlier called G. Oogle and he gave me this. Christmas and New Year at Motorway Services | Motorway Services - every UK motorway service area reviewed and rated

Dont trust google - they directed me to banks, stores , you name it , who turned out to be closed

GlesgaKiss 23 December 2009 09:51 PM

I really would think the service stations would have to stay open. The country can't just come to a halt because it's christmas.

Yes you are right, however, I read it as Xmas eve and totally missed the bit about "had hoped to" lol. :thumb:

My mistake your fault. ;):thumb:

Snax 24 BP stations will be open, I believe. My local is operated by people from the Indian subcontinent, so theyre not overly fussed about Christmas.

We drove from Surrey to Cheshire on Xmas day and the services at M40 Silverstone were open, not just petrol but a skeleton service in the services itself - WHSmiths IIRC but none of the food courts were open

Fair play to the long haul. Good luck with the weather, rather you than me!

CharlesW 24 December 2009 08:04 AM

Thanks for all the info. I hope the weather is ok and there shouldn't be much traffic. I've got winter tyres, so I should be alright on that front.

They'll be open, just another day in the Muslim world ;)

I made it down to Cornwall in one piece, despite taking 2 hours to get from Banchory to Dundee. It usually takes an hour. The A90 was a sheet of ice: indeed the police had closed it from Brechin to Dundee. So I had to divert via Montrose and Arbroath.

Anyway after Dundee progress was rapid.

I am now just about to sit down to Christmas Dinner on Boxing Day.

Jay m A 26 December 2009 04:09 PM

Fair play. I take it no petrol problems then?
