NAS boxes and remote access?
 

Can I ask a question about these NAS boxes?

We don't run a server as such, just a machine that is always on that we use to access files.

We want to be able to access files and folders from home/other offices BUT - I want to be able to limit what people can access. IE office 1 cannot access files of office 2

OR

We use a NAS box that can be accessed remotely and we just put generic files that all offices use.

OR

We use a NAS box that can be accessed remotely but is seperate to our "always on" machine and those files/folders that are changed are then synchronised from the NAS box to the Always on machine.

Things like PCanywhere and GoToMyPc will allow access no problem but I want the access restricted to certain locations.

I'd have thought setting up users and groups and then applying permissions based on the groups to the shares would be the way to go.

You could have an Office 1 group and then set the security properties (one is assuming it's windows, but linux will work in a similar manner, well if it supports ACL - Access Control Lists) on the various shares to allow/restrict what Office 1 can access.

We use a QNAP box to do that sort of thing.

I access from home via sFTP. Easy to set seperate permissions for groups/individuals on whatever folders you like.

Just to clarify are you hoping for a central file server (holding files and folders etc.) making it accessable from multiple locations?

It's not an easy question really unless the sites you have are all linked in some form or you want to have it basically hosted on the internet somewhere.

Oh and QNAP make the best NAS boxes I've used. They are simply fantastic.
