turbo not working prop and low or no boost

Hi peeps,
as above, when static somtimes if you feather the throttle you can
feel the presure building in the pipes and hear the turbo,
if you rev normal no boost presure,
same when driving you can hear the turbo when feathering the throttle but if you put your foot down the turbo dies,
defo turbo related so not maf, map, sensors or anything like that.
all been checked, what would cause this? turbo knakered or actuator?
any ideas,
Shaun.

Big split in turbo to IC pipe?

Trippie 20 December 2009 08:49 AM

i'll check it out today,:)
have you known of this problem before,
why would the turbo die
Shaun.;)

I had exactly the same problem on mine. As I tickled the throttle, pressure started to build, give it alot more and no boost.

The jubilee clip holding on the IC Y-pipe to the turbo was loose. Once that was tightened the car was fine again. So I'm guessing a couple of possibilities:

1) Wastegate not behaving.

2) There's a leak somewhere between the turbo outlet and the air inlet manifold. Either something might be loose or split like Joz said.

Yeah the symptoms do sound like a big air leak post turbo compressor as sited above by axel.

The reason? Well if there's a big air leak from the plumbing post-turbo, then the compressed air will be forced out through the split/gap/etc before it reaches the throttle body. This means that all (or most) of the charged air will not get into the engine. Therefore no, or hardly any, extra boost over atmospheric, so way down on power. Simples.

yeah i have checked the pipes but again why would the turbo die?
when you rev the engine from tick over and gradualy increase the revs
(say 200rpm per second)
up to about 3000rpm the turbo dies?
if you have boost presure or not the turbo shouldn't die should it?
Shaun.

Oh sorry, I've overlooked that.

Er, if the turbo don't wanna spin, then I would have thought there's a major mechanical issue with it. Perhaps the thrust bearing is failing instead? Maybe oil seals? Do you have blue oil smoke out the exhaust?

Trippie 20 December 2009 04:35 PM

runs very clean and normal but no turbo so its like driving a 1.0l car
with no torque, for the turbo not to spin (foocked) i guess i'm just making sure it could be nothing else before i shell out.
Shaun.

Does sound like turbo is knack'd. Keep checking your oil level if you drive it regularly/far.

Take it to a Subaru specialist for a proper, informed opinion, before condemning.
