Car tax - baffled

I've just bought a car that is band M. I automatically assumed as it is a 2005 reg it would £400 to tax it. However having looked at the HPI cert tonight I noticed one of the things it said was tax only £215 for the year. I thought it was wrong so went and checked the current tax disc and yep says £115 for 6 months.

Erm have I missed something on the bandings/pricings and year of car etc or is it a dodgy tax disc on the car? :Suspiciou

In fact just found this on Parkers:

...

Rates effective from 1 May 2009
Date of Registration 6 Months 12 Months Band CO2 (g/km)
31 Mar 2005 – 23 Mar 2006 £118.25 £215.00 K 267
23 Mar 2006 – 1 Apr 2006 £222.75 £405.00 M 267

Rates effective from April 2010
Date of Registration 6 Months 12 Months Band CO2 (g/km)
31 Mar 2005 – 23 Mar 2006 £134.75 £245.00 K 267
23 Mar 2006 – 1 Apr 2006 £239.25 £435.00 M 267

Why is Mar 2005-2006 so much lower than post March 2006? I thought it was anything after 2001?

I'm bloody pleased as I thought I had a £400 road tax bill in January and now know its half that :luxhello:

:luxhello:

May be because a number of ministers own cars pre-March 2006 that emit more than 225kg/co2?

I think it was something to do with the budget and not being allowed to go back more than X amount of years.
Something like they could only go back a year or 2 for the full amount, and then adjust the others accordingly.

Basically, its overly complex so people just pay up. Glad you are on the right side of it.
You will be amused to know you are paying the same road tax as me.... on a 1.8 Picasso ! WTF

What absolutely baffles me, is cars with CO2 emissions over 255g/km cost £405, but a articulated vehicle weighing upto 21,000kg only pays £280?

Because road tax is a complete scam ?
As its not based on no of miles done & based on how much co2 car produces regardless of milleage - only further evidence its a scam tax and not a true way to reduce CO2 levels.

Oh its most certainly a scam, the fact that you can buy a car and pay no road tax, but then go and do 100000miles in a year, compared to £405 road tax and do 100 miles.

Some would say that they are paying Vat on the petrol, but thats the point, road tax is pointless.
