scoobies and snow???
 

hi folks.
with the pending snow this week and next, just wondering if you guys have any advice for members who have not driven there cars in the snow yet?? i am use to driving rear wheel drive cars (had an mr2 roadster for 5 years) but this is the first year in the scooby. unfortunatly not driving it is not an option. ;)

unplug the abs as it makes things worse :(

And so the great annual winter/snow/summer tyre debate begins again... :fight:

Don't expect great things. I've been driving them for 5 yrs and perhaps 225 tyres don't help.

I remmeber some time ago when I drove BMW's I got 4 space saver wheels as they where great in the snow lol
So are Impreza's not good in the snow being 4wd compared to rear wheel drive or front wheel drive cars?

awd is brilliant in the snow. It doesnt make any difference when stopping , just helps with traction and getting up hills.

I really enjoyed it last winter. spot of drifting :thumb:

The highlight for me though was an m3 stuck at the bottom of a hill desperatly trying to get up it. I just whizz past and get up the hill in seconds.

20 mins later I come back and hes still there!!:lol1:

I know my luck, west mids will end up the only part without snow lol

Still be careful tho, as the snow can be fun but ice isn't :(

I am guessing they have a bit more control than a rear drive BM?

as others have said lose the abs fuse toyo t1rs 25psi have it LARGE and if you want to do the spin on ure own ass . clutch . handbrake . release at 11oclock full lock 2nd gear and then do about 3000rpm lovely in carparks look impressive for the chavs in corsas etc the love it but be carefull cos the boys in blue aint to keen lmao

I've had two Mk1s and now I have a Mk3 STI with DCCD and I didn't rate any of them on snow. Moreover I've watched other scoob drivers lose it in snow at 20mph

I think these things are bloody dangerous in the snow because it's easy to be lulled into a false sense of security and once they let go, even at low speed, they just keep on going till they hit something. Of course in a wide open private field - it's great fun!!

However it does bear repeating; when there's snow on the roads, if anyone here thinks they can go just that little bit faster or brake just that little bit later than the other guy... it's pr**ks like you that cause my sister to spend extra time contacting families from the hospital where she works to say that mummy won't be coming home because some dumb sh** thought he was Sébastien F'in Loeb in the rush hour

So when in you're in the snow on public roads, if you're thinking of listening to that little voice which says 'Go on, it's an Impreza'... DON'T

Amen to above the ABS is lethal in the snow, if u are travelling to quick u simply cannot react or stop in time. So slow it right down n watch out for other idiots on the roads to.

I have done over/ well over a 1,000,000 miles on UK roads
in all kinds of cars and this is the best car i have had all most as good as a bike!

I took mine out last year with 215/35 tyres on and had no problems at all:D If your confident driving in Snow then it is great fun:)

My advice would be to get some snow tyres on skinny wheels. The best cars for snow are 15 year old Fiestas worth 50p or proper 4x4's with appropriate tyres. Anyone who thinks their Impreza with low profile wide summer tyres is a good bet in the snow is disillusional I'm aftraid. Even worse, you'll more likely crash given that you think you'll have better traction than you actually do.

Really skinny tyres are not required. In areas with lots of snow ( scandinavia say ) the reason that the (winter) tyres are skinny is that they are used with studs and then become effective at digging through the snow to the ice beneath which is where grip is obtained as the studs bite into it.
In the uk using proper winter tyres will vastly improve grip, having a compound that works in low temps and a slightly chunkier tread pattern that helps remove snow/slush. I have a set of 215/45 R 17 continental wintercontacts and usually have them on the car from november through to march.

Dont remove your ABS fuse because if you have an accident and its found to be unplugged, your basically uninsured.

So they handle like any other car in the snow as you have summer tyres on, totally different if you have chains or winter tyres on though ;) and when you see a pug 106 fly past you and your wondering why it can do that and you cant? its the tyre width, smaller = better in snow ;)
The few things you need to remember is distance, speed and visability (that doesnt mean rear fog lamps either).

because my car is so solid i dont like it in the dry let alone the bloody snow. lol

Nor does it make any difference getting round corners either.

Get a set of winter tyres on it for a start

Big wide low profile tyres in snow/ice - you might as well just have slicks on it.
