BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Ryan Giggs?

Far more worthy winners IMO. Strange how the odds went from 115/1 to 5/2

Or am I just too cynical?

fitzscoob 14 December 2009 05:27 PM

I was pretty surprised he won too.

How do they generate the list of people to vote for, the final few etc?

Trout 14 December 2009 05:57 PM

Chosen by sports journalists from about 20 top newspapers. They each pick a top ten and they create the list from that.

STi wanna Subaru 14 December 2009 05:58 PM

Worthy winner. The only one on the list who in 20 years time people will know who he is.

MattW 14 December 2009 06:00 PM

TBH his achievemnets in the game of football are astonishing, never will you see his like again.

Will 14 December 2009 06:10 PM

Fair play to him :notworthy

The Rig 14 December 2009 06:14 PM

agree the title "of the year" is misleading but a worthy winner from the list

as said, say his name in 10/20 yrs to a generation who grew up the same time he will be known,i fear button etc will not

EddScott 14 December 2009 06:30 PM

But its Sports Personality of the year - what has Ryan Giggs done this year to earn the reward?

Jenson Button has done something never seen in top flight motorsport for a number of decades.

I don't follow football at all so my question is just that rather than a pop at the chap.

Other than playing superbly well in one of the best teams in the world even at the age of 36 (Yes there is a hint of lifetime achievement about the award) he's won his 11th league title. Something I doubt you will ever see bettered. He's also been the captain of that team more often than not. Of course the fact he's achieved this in the national game and is part of a football club with the biggest following helps his cause.

19 years playing for Manchester United is a simply stunning feat to achieve as well in modern football. :notworthy

i'd go along with that, a good footballer having a good season so far.

is he really doing a lot more now than in previous years? the only difference is he's older.
take nothing away, the guy is defying the years. but i don't think any more so than Gary McAllister did for Liverpool back in 2000 and i don't think he got into the short list? (can't remember TBH;))

if Seve wasn't up for the life time award i think Giggs would have got that and Button or the fit girl would have got top prize:D

STi wanna Subaru 14 December 2009 06:53 PM

Athletics and F1 are two of the most tainted sports going which doesn't help them.

mamoon2 14 December 2009 07:13 PM

Don't forget all Giggs' charity work in Africa

In what way tainted? Motorsport celebs never do well outside its their circles.

Ryan Giggs achievements seem more over his career than over one year.

You could make a number of arguments over JBs last 12 months but he's had a fantastic 12 months nonetheless. I doubt he feels particularly stung by it.

r32 14 December 2009 07:21 PM

He is a worthy winner, but I would like to have seen Button get it.

I would also have loved to have seen Peaty on the nominee list, he is after all a world champion, and he comes from Sheffield too......................

STi wanna Subaru 14 December 2009 07:22 PM

Athletics ='s drugs

F1 ='s corrupt teams ala McLaren, Reanult and I'm sure there are more but as with a lot of people F1 now bores me senseless so I don't follow it any closer.

Button should have won, and Brawn should have won Team of the year.

WTF has the Cricket team done? Won a game of cricket !! Bully for them

Vrawn had to design a car, make the car, design new parts all year, manufacture those parts, test those parts, run and maintain a car that was far more reliable that a lot of others (barring the odd loose spring here or there) But.............

apparently that's nothing. Hitting a bat against a ball and winning a game of Cricket. Fcuk me, that's hard. :brickwall

davyboy 14 December 2009 07:54 PM

If cricket is so easy, why don't you take it up and play for England?

I'm no fan of it, but a lot of people are, stop being so blinkered.

averyp2 14 December 2009 08:01 PM

I had to laugh, Englands male cricketers won the Ashes and got team of the year.
Apparently Englands womens cricket team won their ashes AND their world cup but didnt win the team of the year!
Had to laugh at their faces, they weren't happy!! :-)

It's not quite in the same league as designing, building, racing an F1 car & team is it really?

Yes, a professional Cricketer will be pretty handy playing Cricket, buy could they Design, Build, race an F1 car? No.

Could Brawn F1 wear a White wolly jumper and smack a ball about with a wooden bat? yes.

I thought you were going to say F1 wasn't helping climate change :D

davyboy 14 December 2009 08:14 PM

I'm sure the Brawn team would also be able to kick a ball, play tennis, ski, ride horses, and jump on a trampoline.

I can also twist a spanner, drive fast, change wheels and make things.....piece of piss that F1 lark. Several hundred people to put a car on a grid 17 times a year with a budget of millions, **** me thats hard.

Leslie 15 December 2009 11:30 AM

I don't follow football so I can't comment on whether Giggs was a worthy winner or not.

Button was also well up there I reckon, not just for biased reasons, and I was very pleased to see that young lad get a special mention for his outstanding diving successes.

Simon C 15 December 2009 11:42 AM

Next years will be interesting to see if any of our Winter Olympians get a mention.

The bobbers stand a good chance of medals, sadly our biathlon teams dont (funding issues).

And 90% of them are serving personnel.

I dont follow football at all, but I think it should be split between individual and team events, after all I'd like to have seen Button do what he did in a Sauber.

Perfomed consistantly week in week out, belying hs years, won a record breaking 11th championship.

And

He wasn't caught spit roasting some slag by the NOTW

Same can be said of Hamilton, Schumacher, Senna, Mansell.

Be in a slow car (as Button has had previous years) and you win jack Sh!t.

Up to a point I'd say with the first 3, Schumaker and Senna were very good drivers, not sure about Hamilton.

I'd still liked to have have seen what they could do with a good but slightly slower car.

Leslie 15 December 2009 01:38 PM

With the handling of modern racing cars, if they are fairly close in that department most F1 drivers will be able to get similar cornering performance from them. Its is only if you have a major advantage such as the double diffuser that you can leave the others for dead.

When you put a driver of Hamilton's ability into a car of similar cornering performance to the others, if he pulls out an advantage, that is down to the man himself. He is good enough to do that.

If your car is below the others in performance in F1, it is virtually impossible to make it up as they used to be able to do years ago with superior driving ability.
