Just swapped out the intercooler for a STi prodrive one and noticed when i removed the std one there was quite a lot of excess oil in it, is this normal ?

Yes it's normal - it's from the oil breathers. These vent the crankcase and cam area back into the air intake. Not a big problem on standard cars, but some fit a catchcan instead to prevent this.
