It wouls appear that the Elite is not as robust as we thought

Well almost 2 years on my launch day elite has fallen victim to the RROD :(

It started with forza3 i had a lock up on a flying lap :(

GOW gave it big headaches, to the point i could manage one game before lock up .. & RRoD

Tonight talking to the agent, it locked up within 60 seconds, and the RRod was there.. on restart :(

subsequent restarts give a RROD
Luckily the agent confirmed its a free repair due to the RROD

So just waiting for the shipping labels to send it 16 miles down the road for repair

Just hope its back for chrimbo

Yeah you will get it back before then, I had to send my elite for repair when it had the same 3 red lights.

If its out of warranty its a doddle to fix. I sorted my sons a couple of weeks back ( non elite 360 )

Look on youtube at xbox clamp fix. I got the bits from ebay for 4 quid and had it working again in an hour.

( doh, i never read the bit below the picture :) )

Every 360 I've had repaired (14 of them now) has been sent to Germany for repair, and every one has come back within 2 weeks.

14?????

I'm still on my original one from a couple of weeks after launch. (Though I appreciate that in saying that, I have effectively doomed it now!)

ScoobyWon't 01 December 2009 04:45 PM

I sent mine back to Germany for repair in November. It took four days to get there and was repaired on the day it arrived there and sent back to me straight away. It was only gone for 8 days in total.

And they threw in a months free Live membership too :thumb:

StickyMicky 01 December 2009 05:02 PM

My old core went to germany as well IIRC

Mart, yours was not a "jasper" one though was it ?

Shaun 01 December 2009 08:02 PM

^ The original Elite's were still on the older chipset.

mart360 01 December 2009 08:47 PM

It turns out that my launch day Elite is one of the early Xenon/Zepher

chipsets, so a RROD was more a matter of "when" than "if" it goes wrong.

If you want to know what chipset you have, the link below is handy

Easy guide to identify your 360 chip set

The question now is did the Elites have the X clamp mod prior to launch,

and if it did, what / how can they fix it to prevent it happening again?

what the hell do you people do to these consoles do you keep em in the oven or something i have never had a problem with any console i have owned and that cant be down to luck i have left my ps3 on for days by mistake i must add but never had a problem i have played on my xbox 12 hours straight and it has never missed a beat

Iain Young 09 December 2009 09:15 AM

My 360 is sat on top of a glass hifi/av rack. Plenty of fresh air all around, and as far as I'm aware it have never gotten particularly hot. It rarely gets used for more than a couple of hours at a time, and like all of my other electronic equipment, is treated very carefully. I have however, gone through 14 of them. Just unlucky I guess :( I have also been through 3 PS3s (stopped reading discs).

Ironically, my Xbox v1, Dreamcast, Snes, PS2, etc all still work fine. I've only had problems with the new hardware.

Iain, no one has that kind of bad luck! ;) The 3 PS3s is a bit of a giveaway IMO. I know they are not faultless, but the failure rate is miniscule. To have one fail is unlucky, but 3?

You must have something environmentally or something power related to have killed that many consoles.

I think you should write Guinness!

I would agree except that the 360 and PS3 are the only pieces of hardware I have ever had trouble with. Everything else is fine, (including pcs, hifi equipment, older consoles, wii etc). It's all run through surge protected connections, and there's no excessive static or dust etc. The machines simply fail after a while with little or no warning. I'm not sure what else I could possibly do to protect the hardware.

The PS3s both stopped reading discs (a common problem to do with the cheap components Sony use in the blu-ray drive). I had a PS3 HD go as well, but as I replaced it with a 500gb drive, it wasn't really an issue. The 360s have just done the 3 red lights thing each time. MS claims it's an overheating problem, but the machine pretty much runs cold.

deanb1980 09 December 2009 12:14 PM

the only problem with ms is they send you a refurbished unit out when you send yours off. My advise to you as there seems to be another issues as you have had 14 go wrong i would get the gamer fans you can buy for both your ps3 and xbox that should stop the problem, If it still persists after that look at your heating system or other untis you have around it as there heat may affect it plus never stand the xbox or ps3 up as the lasers burn out as the discs are read at an angle

Iain Young 09 December 2009 02:44 PM

I've done all that (consoles are horizontal, had fans/coolers on them etc) and they still failed. The nearest heater is about 10ft away, and no other units around (other than the plasma tv on the wall).

deanb1980 09 December 2009 03:51 PM

strange i must admit lwet me think.
ive got it i know what it is ................

...........UNLUCKY :D

mart360 09 December 2009 10:03 PM

It is/ was a cooling issue....

When i first got the console it was silent, with the internal fans shutting

down almost instantly when the console was shut down..

As time went on the fanr would run on for upto a minute cooling the unit

down once it was turned off..

You could hear the main board flexing and moving at the unit warmed up.

given its fragility, it was only a matter of time lol

STi wanna Subaru 10 December 2009 12:07 PM

Is that the case?! My console takes about 5 seconds or so now to shut off after use where before I thought it was instant. I wondered if they'd changed the settings in the last update to ensure the console cooled slightly after use and didn't sit in it's own hot air.

Neanderthal 10 December 2009 03:53 PM

Like a turbo timer? :lol1:

STi wanna Subaru 10 December 2009 04:27 PM

exactly like that :D

mart360 10 December 2009 06:10 PM

Well its back,

It got the same chipset that fails in it.. hmm

lets see how long this puppy lasts.....

next time round its prolly an arcade (with jasper & hdmi)
