iPhone 3G, HTC Hero, HTC HD2 or other
 

I would like a new contract mobile for less than £30 a month. I would like at least 60 minutes and 20 texts a month, but my main use would be email and internet on 3G, so I would like good 3G coverage which might favour Three or Orange.

I feel the 3GS is expensive and I don't need that much storage, but some of the apps on the Iphone do appeal. I don't mind Windows Mobile, and have also like Blackberries. I like fast processors and nice high resolution/big screens.

I have a lot of music on CDs and wma.

A local phones4u are getting the HD2 in on Thursday, and offered to let me try it next to an Iphone.

So I need to weigh up the value of the HD2 which is free on £30 a month with a few more minutes than a 3G 8GB which is free on £30 a month with a few less minutes but the attractions of the app store which has some handy medical reference apps.

Any pointers? I also have an out of contract Blackberry 8800 which I like, but to get BIS and a new contract is at least £20 a month, might as well get a new phone for a bit more.

Try the iPhone first. Some people cannot get on with the touch screen only keyboard. It does annoy me from time to time.

Oh and if you get an iPhone you'll be a sheep :D and, and, and, it's not free, so ner (Thought I'd make both points before the usual suspects pop in and say the same :D)

It is not free because I'd be getting the non-S model and paying £720 over two years for it! I like the open nature of WM but the apps on the iPhone. One shop gave me a look at a 3GS, but the wifi in the shop wasn't working and they had some reason why they couldn't reconfigure it to browse over 3G, but it was better than the other shop who produced three flat Iphones which were grazed/cracked LOL.

The phones4u manager joked after I'd asked lots of questions that maybe I was an Apple mystery shopper and that he would fail the test because he couldn't show me the browsing LOL. But at least they offered me to return to try the HD2 and 3G 8GB head to head when they get the HD2 in.

I have an HTC Touch Hd and really like it , as for iphone i haven't owned one but may try one next :thumb:

iPhone definatly has the market covered for apps etc.
As for user experience, and what you want from the device, thats another kettle of fish.

Some great touch devices coming out at the moment. Unlikely any will match the iPhone for sales and support, but like I say, what do you want from it.

And is it a touch screen you want, or not bothered?
Tough market to advise on these days.

Orange have the 8520 for 19 a month on a 24 month contract. 300 mins/400text and unlimited data.

Really I would start with the basics... What do you use it for, and do you want a physical keyboard or not.

Thanks, that is the standard deal though available anywhere, you have to pay £122 for the 3GS to get it for £30 a month.

Not bothered about physical keyboard, would prefer a big touch screen.

Snazy, do you know of any sim-only BIS + internet deal that is significantly cheaper than having to get another Blackberry I don't need (have the 8800 unlocked out of contract already)? I need minimal minutes and texts, but want data.

The £20 a month with new 8520 seems good to me lol, but thats me. And its a long contract.

How about getting a PAYG berry? Then putting the SIM in the 8800?

Will keep having a look about though. Have you seen if Orange will add data to a SIM only deal? That said, the SIM only deals are £10 a month, plus BIS would make it £15.. At that point I would be tempted to pay the extra £5 and get a new Berry

Thats an 8gb 3G not an "S"

I have had an HTC Tytn II for about 18 months. It was a high function phone but the touch screen capability is not a patch on the iPhone (new convert to the Empire of Sheep). I would want to know whether HTC had updated their touch screen capability.

I think they used a resistive approach where the iPhone is capacitive. Whatever, the iPhone touchscreen has never once frustrated me, or never once gone off in my pocket. I would put my HTC in my pocket and forget to lock it and find it had called four people, deleted key members from my address book, sent three emails and looked up every porn site since porn was invented!

Surely adding simple screen lock apps solve those problems.

Not saying the touch or UI will match the iPhone, but its not a fatal flaw.

That is the only issue that I have with my Sony X1, although since upgrading to WinMo 6.5 it is better as it now has an automatic lock and a slide to unlock feature. WinMo 6.5 has given my phone a bit of a new lease of life.

I do like the look/feel of the iPhone just i cant seem to get on with it as it doesnt seem to like my fingers very much!

I never realised looking for SIM only plans or PAYG BIS packages was so bloody awkward!

The SIM should work in any phone, regardless of BBY or not. If thats the deal i think it is, you need to pay for top ups for calls/texts.

The HD2 has a capacitative oil phobic screen.

Touch 2 is not the same as HD2 which has only been out about a week.

Sounds like the right deal to breathe life back into the BB if you wanted to go that way then. Although its on T-Mob (which will soon be party of Orange anyway, so might share 3G masts?)

Everyone on this board who bought one loves it, everyone who bought the next iPhone killer has been disappointed. Simple. Don't fight it.

Does it make any difference with contracts if you use 2G data much more than 3G? Can you do everything with 2G that you can with 3G (and run all the same apps) just with slower data rates?

I'm just thinking that since at home it would use wi-fi, and ditto in airports etc, I wonder what use I'd make of 3G? Do Blackberry users on 2G miss the 3G of an Iphone 3G or not because of the data compression?

I found the occasional browsing on the Blackberry was a bit slow (but in the UK it always showed GPRS rather than EDGE like it did abroad), but still useful just for checking some info or a price when shopping etc.
