Guys - I know you're all busy men working on customers cars

However when you get a minute give me an honest and simple answer
What are the chances of a complete newbie to machine polishing making a complete and utter balls of my car
I'd love to order this - and at what appears to be a fantastic deal too

Thanks,
Shaun

Darren.1987 26 November 2009 04:21 PM

as far as im aware its better for the novice to get a DA as you cant really ruin paint unless you keep it in one spot continuously.

i have used my friends meguiars polisher which is more expensive than the kestrel one but not meant to be as good.

i will be getting one of these kits :) great deal

WRX_Rich 26 November 2009 05:04 PM

ordered :)

Shaun (Urban)....as you know I do quite a bit of car cleaning/valeting/detailing.....

I would be more than happy to demo my selection of pads and polish combo's for you....

Just gimme a shout if you are interested?

Also FYI Ryan @ DetailNI is going to be hosting a detailing meet at his premises in the very near future if you would prefer some one to one tips and advice on different products and polish/pad combo's

I use the highly trustworthy Porter Cable system, but if I were changing would invest in a Kestrel DA....tried and really liked KB1's machine :)

sparkytrix 26 November 2009 08:39 PM

i thought subaru paint was soft also

I'd actually tried calling detailNI several times (5 times now I think - using the number from their site, but they don't answer the phone)

I'd nearly rather have a crack at it myself as its the best way to learn, but obviously being a newbie the uncertainty puts some doubts in the mind
I read a bit of stuff yesterday and it does seem like thats the machine for me - least likely to reek havoc

brocks 28 November 2009 01:01 AM

I know I will be working on a Spec C before Xmas...if I post where and when up, and you are free you are more than welcome to come and have a look at what I do.....

Open offer, and not trying to sell services etc LOl

urban 28 November 2009 01:28 PM

Yeah, fair enough

Pre 2001 (i.e. classic) Subaru paint is typically hard, while post 2001 is usually intermediate, although in both cases jap spec imports and some UK cars can have surprisingly soft paint. VW paint is always rock hard. Please see the paint hardness discussion and look up table on this link for more info on this subject...

You are highly unlikely to make a balls up with a dual action machine. For a full read up about this, please take the time to read these two guides about the polishing process and what equipment to choose...

See first answer above. Some Scoobies do have softish paint, but in the vast majority of cases pre 2001 (i.e. classic) cars are hard, while post 2001 cars are intermediate in terms of paint hardness. Jap imports tend to be soft, but some UK spec cars have turned out to be too. Subaru paint certainly varies more than most other manufacturers in terms of paint hardness. :)

Got mine on Friday, havent used it yet just need to have a good read up on polish etc then ATTACK the car lol :D

So for a classic uk spec cars what kit would you suggest we get?

Would using the hard paint kit based abrasive and pads ruin my car if it had soft paint?

Not sure on which one to buy.

robby 29 November 2009 07:35 PM

I ordered mine yesterday :)

Is there a video guide online showing exactly how to use it?

Thanks

kennyc 29 November 2009 08:59 PM

Another one for videos :thumb:

Only thing your new site lacks IMO

I've never come acrosss a soft pre 2001 UK spec car (only imports), so I'd personally opt for the hard paint kit. In fact, the majority of classics I've had the pleasure of working on have been rock hard. Obviously, working on soft paint with hard paint pads and polishes isn't great as you will remove more paint than necessary; that said, if you start with stage 2 (i.e. the finishing polish 85RE and yellow finishing pad) you will be quickly and easily able to check if any correction is being achieved (on hard paint doing this first will vastly improve gloss but won't do much correction). :)

Not yet; planned for spring 2010. Just the images in the last section of this online guide...

Yep, we had hoped to be further on with this for the launch, but all of the other design work got in the way. Expect lots of new video content through 2010 and beyond. :thumb:

sparkytrix 30 November 2009 07:15 PM

so would you reccomend going for the 'soft' kit on a MY99 type R?

Also have menz 203S so could use this if needed?

Thanks,
Ross

Rich @ PB 02 December 2009 08:58 PM

Yep, that's the wisest way forward given the car; if you found the Final Polish II in the soft kit didn't offer quite enough bite then stepping up to the 203S with the Lake Country pads included in the kit would be the logical way forward. However, despite us having come across numerous soft imports, I would still stress that the chances are it will be on the hard side rather than soft. :)
