I need to get some 2" wide 1/8" thick aluminium about 6 foot of it.

Dave if no one else on here can help, a very close friend of mine has a sheet metal shop, and could cut these for you. How many do you need, and what finish do you want?

Also what do you want them for, go faster strips for the golf?

V4JDMSTi 24 November 2009 07:19 PM

Line Specy's hands with pound notes I'd say ;)

He's making a wide arch kit to make it look like a scoob.

Not bothered about finish, going to have a go at making some door sills. Everything has GTi or TDi on them

Will probably end up a complete shambles but gonna give it a go :D

Dave,

beware of raw aluminium, it needs to be anodised or possibly laquered otherwise it will oxidize and 'bloom' / tarnish.

Also I suspect 3.2mm will be way too thick.

For finish you would be better with stainless steel, but that is very tough to work with, especially with hand tools.

As Matt, Speccy was my first thought on here.

If for door sills i'd suggest thinner than 1/8". I'd got down to 1/16. You might have trouble with the gap between the sill and door otherwise. You've got a quality German car now. Tollerences will be tighter :D

They do look good, but I still have reservations about the 3.2mm thick.

If square ends then i'm sure if you give me the exact size I could have them cut for you.

Indeed any shape is possible on the laser cutter, but the set up for that is big money.

I am still in sensory overload from when I made some heel plates for my front mats out of kitchen floor chequer plate tiles. They ended up a bit too "Max Power" for my liking.

Now as for crop circle kick plates? :wonder:

firebug 25 November 2009 10:17 PM

if you go to into a local sheet metal fabricators workshop theyl prob cut a few strips off a sheet for you for for a note ot two. . . i use 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm sheets at my place in alu, stainless and mild steel. . . but im in bradford.

firebug 25 November 2009 10:25 PM

just noticed youve said there for door cills, i made some for my xr2i years ago. 1mm , 1.2mm or 1.5mm stainless will be strong enough if your going to bend it to cill profile. if you wer to go to a metalworkers it would take 10 mins if that to make them.

Spec'c'57 26 November 2009 08:24 AM

I agree, 3mm is WAY OTT, i made some years ago for my XR2 out of 1mm Stainless. Very BLING. lol. If you want Aluminium dave i will go have a look in a mo to see if we have some 1.5mm, if so it will most likely be polished with plastic coating so the face will be good to go with some clearcoat. :thumb:

Diesel_DC 26 November 2009 02:55 PM

Thank's steve that would be appreciated :thumb:

I will have a measure up to see how long I need it
