Whining? No, Not the G/F!

My scooby has started making a whining noise from the engine bay.
Its an 02 wrx. The noise is coming from the front RH corner of the main block as im stood looking into the bay from the front. It seems to be coming from what i believe to be the water pump? (next to the alternator?)
Any way to prove this?:wonder:

Any help and advice would be gratefully recieved!!

Eh? Your post is a little confusing, to say the least.

The pump next to the alternator is the power steering pump - but this would be on the left side of the block as you look into the engine bay from the front.

You can prove whether or not it's this simply by removing the auxiliary drive belt and starting the engine for a few seconds. If the noise disappears you know it's coming either from the alternator, PAS pump or drive belt.

However, before you do that, if you're sure the pump is where the noise is coming from, check first that the PAS fluid level in the reservoir at the side of the radiator is within its min/max levels. If it is, make sure the belt isn't over- or under-tightened.

This is what my engine bay looks like.
In the centre is a rotor looking part, Alternator poss??
And to the right is a small unit that looks like it is pumping water into the radiator area? Maybe it is the Power steering pump?

Excuse my stupidity?!

Ah right, that's a bit clearer. Yes the "rotor looking part" in the middle is the alternator. The PAS pump is on the left of it, as you look at this picture. The gadget on the right is the aircon compressor.

Thanks for your reply. I will investigate the belt tension etc on Thursday and will then confirm either way. Thanks for your help, Fingers crossed its only this and nothing major.:thumb:
