short motor question.

hi all,
im building a 2.1 cd short block or stroker block and wondering about the first turn over and start process, will i be able to start it ok as there will be a bigger combustion chamber, or will it need mapping in order for it to start? i will be running with TD05 turbo for running in and once its done around 600 miles ill put the bigger turbo on and get it mapped, thanks, phil.

if i am right (dont quote me ):wonder: but i think the car may not ignite the mix correctly due to there being a longer stroke , if the stroke is the same as standard then it should be ok to start , the car should be ok to run on MILD boost for a while but i recomend at least fitting a walboro fp just in case , either way a remap is best when changing anything as you probably know better than me

the stroke will be shorter, so im thinking it wont start as the mix will be weakend by a bigger space?

it should start and run but I would get it check for running in, and setup if required.

With an otherwise standard spec, they run just fine during running in.

it will be running with a decat 3" system, equal length headers, v3 heads, grey injectors (for a bit of pretection) parrellell + hi flow rails, fpr, blitz induction, swap back to standard ecu, would it be ok to run in with that lot on? thanks, phil.

I would get it checked

...and dont forget to prime the oil system before giving it fuel and spark :)

How do you do that?

Carefully, disconnect the crank sensor, then turn the engine over until the oil light goes out. Do it in stages, rather than just winding in one go. It shouldn't take long. Once the light has gone out, reconnect the sensor, then fire it up with the throttle closed. Once it's running, turn it off, and re check the oil level.
Has this car been mapped previously with the injectors? if so, it should be ok to run until you can get it checked.

I'd prime it with the sparkplugs out too if it's a new motor, to take all the load off the big-end shells.

Jolly Green Monster 25 November 2009 11:44 PM

yeah and also they tend to prime quicker if you don't prefill the oil filter.. unlike when you do an oil change when you should prefill the oil filter.

thanks for all the suggestions and the helpfull tips about priming, one problem though, if im running it with the standard ecu, what can i get checked and how, it will have the standard injectors also so what damage can be caused? sorry for not understanding.

Check that everything is plumbed up correct.
Check it is not rich or lean, check it is not detting, monitoring and with subaru knowledge it is easy to check all the above with help of wideband and detcans, check it is not boosting too high (depending on your planned running in),
Advice on best way to run it in, oil change routine.
Seen fuel lines on wrong, wash jets connected to inlet manifold, fuel pressure vaccum missing, map sensor plumbed to turbo etc
