PPG. Limits?
I'm in line to get a PPG box, helical gearset i believe
im going to be running 420/450 ish I am fairly positive that the box can handle that as the owner was running more :D but what is the limits of the PPG? cheers:thumb: |
bump
mentions 400bhp on PPG website but nothing about Tq |
Has anyone had one fail under 500bhp then?
|
Well you know Stews lasted ok at 520+ dragging for a whole season
|
andy harvey has killed a few straight cut in his time attack car i believe running about 585bhp, they aint unbreakable, but for the price there about the strongest you can get. i think helical and straight cut have similar limits

Why bother with the hassle of rebuilding a WRX box with PPG when for very similar money you can have an almost indestructible 6spd STi box with all the kit to convert your WRX.
It's good for 600ft/lb torque and is used by the majority of scooby driving Time Attack competitors in more or less bog std trim barring some gear ratio changes depending on the application but it's a pretty bullet proof box unliike the 5spd even with PPG that i have heard let go on more than one occasion. I'm not saying PPG isn't strong but there's a good reason why most TA competitors don't use them. To do a 5spd PPG properly you want the dog box and synchro arrangement with straight cut 1st and 2nd gears, helical 3rd and 4th and leave 5th as standard as on track it doesn't get used much and you want a nice quiet normal ratio final gear for motorway cruising. |

Think it all depends on where and how you drive, ive seen a few 6speeds have faults on the drag strip
This is the spec on the PPG PPG STRAIGHT CUT 1ST TO 4TH STANDARD 5TH BILLET FORKS RATIOS FOR BOX, 1ST GEAR 3.08 2ND GEAR 1.87 3RD GEAR 1.32 4TH GEAR 0.95 AND STANDARD STI 5TH GEARBOX CASING TY754 Built by Zen |
ppg s and 6 speed break
motor sport as we know it ppg kit mine lasted 3 years @ 500 plus 2nd gave up recently found remains in bottom of box box was great until this gutted really loved the ratios gazza |
getting repaired soon , but i am thinking ppg kit in a 6 speed box
but price puts me off big time gazza |
i would go with an sti six speed that is what myself and all the other scoobyclinic time attack cars run. they are virtually indistructable handle in excess of 600bhp
|
Cheers for ratios anger and thanks for input.
i'll never go over 450/500 in the car plus the PPG box im getting is MUCH cheaper than any 6 speed set up :) |
