cranks

what year did the STi cranks on the classics change to rear thrust bearing?

and would a 96 crank fit my sti v5 98

1999 I think with the introduction of the phase 2 engines? definately dont think that a 96 crank will fit a Version 5 STI, though you will be best buying new tbh, cranks are one thing I would upgrade, they are not exactly expensive either for a twin scroll one ;) (the cross drilled nitrided ones).

Tony:)

Agree with Tony here, I personaly would not want to build a Subaru engine using a second hand crankshaft + the one you have your eye on will not fit as it will be of centre thrust vintage.

If however your budget dictates that you have no chioce, then you will need to go for a crankshaft that was fitted to an engine that has an engine No: of 2213362 or later... The first rear thrust cranks were fitted to the phase 1.5 (EJ20G) engines in March 1998 and then continued for the introduction of the phase two engines (EJ205 & EJ207) in 1999 and has continued, up to and including the current models.

For your purpose you could use a crankshaft from ANY Subaru 2.0ltr or 1.8ltr turbo or non turbo engine built after March 1998/eng no: 2213362 as the crankshaft dimensions are identical.... Also, there are no differences between classic Sti,Wrx & Uk Crankshafts.
