Silly question time - what exactly does the intercooler spray in my Sti2 do? Does it just cool the intercooler or is it spraying a mist into the mixture to cool it and help atomisation? Chap I bought it from didn't seem too sure and I have no literature on the car.

Colin,

The STi water spray squirts water over the top of the intercooler to help cooling: MRT Rally's page on Intercooler Water Sprays

The "spraying water into the mixture" is water injection which is a different thing. See Aquamist's site for more info.

Thanks

Gavin

Thanks Gavin

Previous owner described the Aquamist system, hence my reluctance to use it till I knew more about it....

I presume the best time to use it is just before caning it - e.g. just before overtaking. Any ideas as to how long to spray for?

Cheers

On my MY 95 WRX RA if you press the water spray button it continues to run on a 5 second timer. Check if yours is the same.
As you suggest, I use it once or twice just before I'm about to 'go for it' It drops the charge temp by 2 - 3 degrees C

Also, if I've been pottering around slowly in traffic, (I know from my charge temp gauge that this is when I see the highest temps) I give the button a few presses (5 secs apart !) before I thrash it.
This helps the temp come down quicker and on my car reduces the chance of seeing more lamps on my knocklink !

Was it you I was talking to at Knockhill yesterday ? White Sti wagon ?

Almost! I've a Silver sti wagon and would have been at knockhill if I'd known something was on!

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be shopping for a charge temp gauge next....:)

Colin
