HTPC graphics card - quiet please !
Any suggestions as mine sounds like a hovercraft. :(
Would like HDMI with 5/7.1 support, 1920x1080 TV used. I usually blow around £200, ( 3 years ago !) Is it currently all about the 5850 ? TIA dunx |

TIA dunx I just built a blu-ray capable HTPC based on: Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H 785G Socket AM3 DVI VGA HDMI Out 8 Channel Audio MATX Motherboard - Ebuyer AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Chche Socket AM3 Retail Box Processor - Ebuyer LG CH08LS10 Super Multi Blu-Ray Reader & DVDRW with LightScribe SATA Black - Full Retail Box With Software - Ebuyer Antec Fusion Remote Veris Black MATX Media Center Case - No PSU - Ebuyer Coolermaster Silent Pro 500W Modular PSU - Ebuyer Completely silent and cold to the touch. Processor stays below 40 degrees. Flawless blu-ray playback with on board graphics! |
Erm, noise is the only problem, as the GTS 8800 is three years old now.
Got an X2 @ 3.2 GHz, 2 Gb of DDR-1066 (?), blah blah blah. JUST NEED SOME PEACE AND QUIET ! lol dunx |
If you want complete silence and to spend less than £200 quid buy the motherboard, processor & RAM.... reuse everything else (but bin the graphics card).... Rebuild it and keep it until Ultra High Definition forces you to upgrade again!
Or look at something like a passively cooled gainward 9500GT 426018336-0278 - 1GB Gainward 9500 GT, 800MHz GDDR2, GPU 550MHz, Shader 1400MHz, 32 Cores, D-Sub/ HDMI/ DL DVI-I - Scan.co.uk Not as good as the on board GFX on the motherboard above though and will run much hotter. |
Any of ATI's 4XXX range have 7.1 through HDMI.
Personally I run a 4670 - but the 4630 will do the job (as long as you're not gaming). The new ATI 5XXX cards will have TrueHD support. |
Cheers, some people seem to think I'm going to swap it all, not just wanting a QUIET graphics card.
Thanks, dunx |
Er, you have had 2 suggestions for graphics cards.
You are welcome! /s |
