USB powered optical drive

I'll be getting my hands on a netbook over the next few days...... :thumb:

However, I know they don't come come with an optical drive......

So for those of you that are in the know..... Whats good and whats to avoid....

I'd like to be able to read/write CD/DVD Speed is not such an issue.......

Slimline would be a bonus.... but not sure what the current form of these would be.....

I pressume the life of the netbook battery will be drastically effected......

Many thanks in advance...

Phil

This is what I got to go with my NC10 PC World - LG Portable slimline Re-Writer DVD REWRITER DRIVE - Shop for cheap DVDRWs works off the single usb lead but they also supply a second lead. Can't say about how battery is affected as only really use it to put programs on, and if ripping cd's usually have the computer on mains.

Check how many USB sockets are required for a particular drive, as often (mostly) they need two to grab enough power - has your netbook got enough (spare) slots?

Also, make sure that it can be powered by the mains (ideally with a supplied transformer) for more reliable "home" use. Some are USB only (no external power).

Currently using a Samsung Slim DVD/CD burner and reader which only uses 2 x USB to work. Very light and good drive. Use this on my Asus EEE Pc901 without issues.
