Hi guys,

I'm thinking of taking the wife to New York for our anniversary. Has anybody on here been before? I'm looking for any tips/recommendations from you lot on prices, hotels, flights, where to go etc.

I have done a lot of research myself but though I would ask anyway.

Expensive and just like the movies. Everywhere feels like you've already been there. Save your money and go somewhere like Prague.

New York versus Prague :lol1:

I took my lady to NY a few years ago for Valentines day. Was meant to be a long weekend, but due to heavy snow on the Sunday I was leaving on, got snowed in til for a week. Ny literally closed down !

We stayed around the Manhatten area, near 3rd Avenue which made seeing the sites far easier.

As for shopping, dont spend your money / buy your goods, until you've properly seen all the other markets / areas, as you will find the further out you go, the more deals there are.

I quited liked NY, but thought I would enjoy it more. Its like London but with American cars. Empire state building was impressive, Statue of Lib was smaller than I thought and central park, well Regents Park is far better. What made my trip was enfact the snow, as the best fun we had was climbing up the 15 ft snow pile and diving into it , in the middle of 3rd Avenue !!!!.

I thought NY was rather dear, all the resturants around the famous areas are big bucks, so again seek out the outer areas.

Its worth going, but I wouldnt go again.

i went a few years ago..just before christmas, took the missus as a wedding present..it was freezing but well worth it..everywhere looked amazing with the snow and christmas ligts etc. we will defo be going back one day..only spent 3 nights there and stayed at The Ameritainia Hotel, nothing over the top but nice all the same. cost me £1200..abit pricey but it was christmas so i think thats why

I love the city, if i could afford to live on Manhattan i would do. It's easy to get around with the grid system of the roads, and the subway is simple enough to use. Obvious tourist traps are the Empire State, Statue of Liberty, Broadway, Central Park, Macy's, Time Square, that sort of thing. Avoid the Bronx and Lower East Side, there's nothing there apart from a feeling of menace. Try and get tickets to a game, the Giants, Jets, Nicks, Yankees, Mets etc etc. Try a salt beef sandwich with a celery soda. Do the helicopter ride round the harbour. If you like the bright lights of the city, you'll love NY.

*DON'T try and do it on a budget, you will end up disappointed. Just go for a real splurge and worry about the bill when you get home. :thumb:

Hotels in NY are expensive by any normal standards; last time we went we stayed at the Sofitel - decent price/quality and very well located on W 45th St, just off 5th Avenue.

I love the scale of the buildings in NY, it's something I never tire of. You should visit Grand Central Station, it's got an amazing concourse and then visit the Oyster Bar down in the basement.
