rev problems

i have a 98 non turbo wagon ( just getting into scoobies and cant afford to insure a turbo yet).

anywhere after 3k if i plant the throttle it makes a misfireing sound like is starved for fuel or its running on 3 cylinders. The engine will run fine up to 3k and if im very slow on the throttle i can get it past 3k with no problems but its like the smallest movement. the engine check light also flashed on on the way down the motorway but then went off again.

things that have been suggested to me are the MAF sensor or coil packs, can anyone give me any suggestions how to narrow it down, would plug it in and read the code but the light has now gone off but still have the problem.

a friend told me to disconnect the maf sensor and see if the problem is still there, which i have done and it is still not getting past 3k.

any suggestions would be welcome dont mind doing the work myself but i dont know any common faults as ive been bike orientated for years
