General Anesthesia
 

Possibly going to have a small op under GA. It's not a necessary op but I'm wanting it done. The biggest complication is likely to be the GA, so those in the know please help me stop being a wuss.

I had a GA when i was 7 for my tonsils out so hopefully it'll be easy.

biggest issue i have with GA's is my throat after i wake up, the breathing tube plays havoc with it, gets real sore and painfull for a few hours after. but other than that no issues at all. i wouldn't worry about it :)

Not sure I'd classify a penis enlargement as a small op. LOL

Seriously though, if you have no other medical problems, and the surgery is day case then the risks are very low. Always been difficult to establish the incidence of unexpected death under GA, but somewhere around 1 in 500,000.

If you have no other medical problems, then the leading causes of death/serious injury would be

1) Anaphylaxis (allergic reaction)

2) Equipment failure

On the whole GA is very very safe in this country, however sometimes things do go wrong.

Maybe not what you want to hear, but should be part of your decision making process when deciding to have an op

Your anaesthetist will tell you best. If you are completely fit and well apart from the small thing you're having operated, the risk is very small indeed.

However, if you have lung/heart/vascular disease and diabetes, are on 30 medications and look blue and breathless at rest, plus have a neck like a whale and lots of dodgy teeth, it might not be such a good idea ;)

I have had three major operations in recent years and the GA was the very least thing to worry about. Once they put the anaesthetic into the back of your hand, you are away with the fairies in no time at all. I had no after effects at all.

GA has come on miles since you would have 7 assuming you're more than 18 now. Won't be a problem. I've had loads of GAs unfortunately due to dodgy knees and the difference from the 80's to now is massive

The worst thing, is that you know you will be one of the ones who are awake during the op, but you cant move :eek:


Seriously though, i had an operation once, and had never been knocked out before :D
So i decieded i was going to fight it for as long as i could :lol1:

I remember watching the nurses faces to see if were going to nod to each other or something, maybe like a little sign to say that i would be asleep soon, i was ready for them, i was going to fight the hell out of it, just for a laugh :D

I've had 9 in my lifetime and I have to say having a GA is quite possibly one of the best feelings in the world. :thumb:

Nowt to worry about. (except possibly waking up half way through your knob op and not being able to tell anyone, but feeling all the pain...) ;)

Only after effect I had was occasionally feeling very very tired at intervals over the following week. One was during a on-to-one with the MD. 'It's OK boss. I'm not falling asleep because you're boring me. Honestly ...... '

That was about 15 years ago mind so things may have moved on since.

I've had at least a dozen operations under general aneasthetic and as has been said above it's the best feeling in the world.

A lot of people seem to panic about it but once you've had it you realise that it is not an issue.

Coming back round is cool as long as you have pain relief!

I had my appendix out and suffered from motion sickness when they wheeled me out of the lift in a semi conscious state. I chucked up everywhere. Other than that, no problems any other time.

Just ask the Anaesthatist to put in a few milligrammes of Midazolam before the main induction agent.........and then some Fentanyl before you wake up :D

I have a heart with an irregular beat. The heart guy said it might be worth trying to stop it and restart under GA. He said that they would try twice and if that didn't work to forget it.

I asked about the odds of not seeing the next day and was told 200 to 1.

So that was 100 to 1 for each GA. So I had one (which didn't work) and refused to have the second. I am still around but I guess I could flake out any minu..........

In my area which is dentistry.......Provided that a qualified anaesthesist oversees the procedure, the risk of death is very small. A study from 1982 entitled "Deaths asociated with dentistry" (British Dental Journal) put the mortality rate at 1:338,536 for outpatient general anaesthesia.........

The statistics are a bit iffy because of the variables but if you are ASA class I fit then the morbidity rate is about 1 in 800,000.

Didn't bother me opting for a short GA for soem minor op last year :D
