Help Sick Scoob!
Right the scoob is very sick!
a while ago now it started randomly cutting out, by this i mean it would just drop the revs and basically stall, would always start again and run fine. it started doing this more recently, to the point it would not start again. it would fire up but cough and splutter then stall again. last few weeks it started doing it whilst driving, try and put your foot down and it holds back. now it wont run at all. when you get it driving within a mile it will just cough splutter hold back and then stall. during these problems the crankshaft sensor has been replaced and a new walbro fuel pump. these have been changed after it started but have had no affect. any ideas anyone?:wonder::wonder::wonder::wonder: im losing the plot driving round in the van!:cuckoo: its a 99 classic import always run on vpower Cheers guys:thumb: |

as said its a 1999 classic normal 2l turbo lump ej20 sorry not mechanically minded, cel light? it does have a modified MAF aparently, obviously this can still blow |
What's modified about the airflow sensor? Do you know, or is it possible you have a standard one and a previous owner has sold you a line?
It's important that you get this right as if you do have a non-standard sensor which has been properly fitted (and the ECU possibly recalibrated) and it has gone, you will need to know what sort it is and replace like for like. CEL light = the check engine warning on the instrument panel. Would be well worth you searching for the term "black plugs" either here or on Scoobypedia |

check engine light doesnt come on when it stalls, neither whilst driving. only lights up when turning the ignition on a garage has told me about the MAF wouldnt know what has happened with the current MAF, bought it off a forecourt. |
If you don't already know, the MAF sensor sticks out the back of the tube bolted to the top of the air filter housing (assuming your car has a standard induction tract). Take us some close-up photos of that part of the engine bay and we should soon be able to tell you whether it's standard, and what it is if it isn't.
Incidentally, if you have to keep driving the car while you get this diagnosed, you'd be well advised to stay completely off boost until you've got it fixed. Big risk of serious engine damage driving hard on a blown MAF (if that's what it is). |

aparently for the 99/2000 scoobs subaru released a new MAF on the advisory it should be fitted to these MY cars. anyone else heard this? it is hopefully going into the garage tomorrow, if it gets there, will let you know what happens

No offence taken. If it doesn't solve his problem I'd refund his money. Just trying to help a fellow owner, but I know where you are coming from. Glad I changed to simtek ;)

took it into the garage on saturday and they chucked a new MAF on for a trial over a week. drove it round after and on sun, and monday night, no troubles at all so i reckon its all sorted! cheers again:thumb: |
Excellent! Did you (or the garage) reset the ECU after fitting the new sensor? If not, do it yourself. :)
Oh - take it that it did have a standard sensor in it to begin with then? |
