FITTING WATER TEMP GAUGE,CAN YOU USE WIRE FROM TEMP ON CLOCKS

fitting water temp gauge i know most people have a alloy adaptor in rad top hose to fit sensor but my question is cant i just wire the wire on the gauge to the original temp sensor in the engine bay or the wire on the back of the clocks that goes to the temp,I know when i tryed connecting it to the ecu water temp wire it didnt work but the clocks have a different temp sensor to the ecu so would it work has anyone tryed it

cheers in advance

the sensor is resistive and has it own calibration so might not calibrate perfect
i would not hard wire in just touch connections to see what result you get but i would do this under the inlet manifold and disconnect the original wire first that way you cannot damage clocks
