STI Gear shift indicator...
 

Quick question for all those STI drivers out there. Where abouts in the rev range do you have yoiur shift indicator set to ?? Roughly where does the peak power start to fall away - because that's obviously the best time to shift.

ive set mine to 6200 seems to work well although i rarely use the shift light on public roads as they tend to be a bit busy

tc - would that be a spec you have there so a higher rev range? as i have a mk1 t25 and was wondering the same question, as obviously i have the 2.5 fitted in mine but a jdm rev counter so it would be nice to know the peak performance

The key thing is not to over rev your engine. High revs is what really kills your average scoob engine. Have your rev limiter set to 7000rpm and the shift light/warning around 6000rpm. That works well.

Normally the time between the warning sound going off and you depressing the throttle pedal the engine rpm is still rising and will have moved on 2 or 3 hundred rpm so take that into account.

I think my peak power is something around that mark since the remap and as has been said you will only kill the engine if you constantly rev it to the redline so i found 6200 to be a happy medium afterall if you exceed the peak powerband then you will only be losing power at higer revs anyway

Exactly my point, you dont need to hit the red line in virtually any car to get the best out of it. Somewhere between 6000 and 6500 was what I was going for, so it sounds like im on the money !!

in my 2.5 a rolling road session established that i had max toque at 4200 rpm a max bhp at 6150 rpm. with this info at hand i have set my shift indicator at 5200 rpm (in the middle), some say that this is a little short but i find for road use it pulls pretty well like this, and i am not ragging it. but to set mine any higher than 6100 rpm would be pointless imo.

ps , it is not that often i actually hit the shift indicator anyway tbh, only when the horns come out:nono:.....:D

Ive a TSL 333 STI 05, Max power is at 6100RPM i think, so after what you not gaining much and like people say it does not do the engine much good. so mines set fro 6K to give me a chance to shift.

Last car (Elise) and current car (172) both have shift lights and i find them a complete waste of time. Do you lot actually use these things????

Depends on the spec of your motor, ( 2.0 STI ), mine is re-mapped and it pulls like a train to the limiter. :)
But on track I use 6200 rpm as a shift point as I'm trying to be quick, not just enjoying it !

Rolling road results state that I hit max totque at 3400-rpm & max bhp at 5200-rpm holding almost level (with 8 bhp drop) until 7000-rpm, I have my rev light set to 6000-rpm!

Quick, very quick & pulls like a train.

Also where is the shift light on the 05 jdm (that is if they have one)

And how do you set it? Can it be done or is it a job for a mapper

The bug eye JDM STI, I had worked slightly differently to my Hawkeye STI. I seem to remember just turning the left hand needle and setting the rev guage to where i wanted it to be - that was it job done.

In the Hawkeye you have to turn ignition on, turn the rev needle on the left hand side of the dash - then set it to where you want it to. Leave it for 3 seconds, it sets and goes to the on/off stage - if there are two lines -- then it's off, turn it to the right and it will say On.

That's it job done.

Now have mine set to 6200 as well, on the basis that by the time you actually react and change gear your getting close to the 7000 red line anyway.

ok cheers i will have a look at it today, see if i can figure it out so the common figure seems to be 6200 then?

that is on my 2.5 t25 jdm set up as they have a higher rev limit to the uk sti?

sti mav sorry is your hawkeye a jdm or uk?

also would the 2.0 and 2.5 ltr make a difference in where to set the limit

My Hawk is technically an import albeit only from Cyprus. The last Scooby I had was a 51 plate Bugeye JDM STI.

I have mine set at 7000rpm, not because thats when i change gear but because if i hear that i really need to be changing gear and having a quiet word with myself. I've set it at that because i don't want to be hearing or seeing the shift light everytime i put my foot down for what ever reason. Even when driving enthusiastically i know i'm changing gear around 6-6500 rpm just by the feel/noise of my car.
