I am looking for a mapping software that will allow me to scan maps into a laptop computer and then connect to a GPS to give me real time position readings. I am living in those parts of the world that have not been covered by CD-Rom maps yet, and got to DIY.

At the moment, I am using a Garmin Etrex connected to a Palm Vx using GPS Pilot Atlas software, which does the trick, but the screen is awfully small. Just thought there should be programs out there for PC/laptops before hand-helds and PDA's come along. Any info from you techies out there will be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Lo Kok Kee

PTMW, Thanks, but that's not exactly what I needed. I need to be able to scan my own maps into the system, not working off CD-rom maps which is what infomaps@directions is based on.

If you are looking for just the software then try these

Arcview

I've tried a few and the one I keep using is Oziexplorer (with a garmin 12XL).

It's is the best by far.

Is there a bit of software that will do the opposite? I want to plan a route on something like Autoroute and then download the waypoints into a (cheap) GPS (i.e. one without mapping facilities).

Actually I don't own a GPS at the moment, so recommendations gratefully received.

Thanks for the info, guys. Sure beats making a search on Yahoo.

Carl, I would recommend the Garmin Etrex, which retails for around USD 110, about the cheapest in the market, plus comes with a splash-proof case so you can use it in the rain or in a boat. Has a port for connecting to PC or PDA. Haven't tried the uploading bit though.
