i have a 2000 x reg 2.0l turbo 2000 uk car ,just developed the said noise, cant hear it when im driving but when you get out the car it is very noticeable, sounds similar to a tappet noise, are the any common problems? and does this engine have hydraulic tappetts? any help much appreciated

Might be worth checking the spark plugs are tight as that will make a distinctive tappet noise as the compression blows past the loose plug.
Another thing to check for is an exhaust gas leak from the header/manifold area - that also sounds like a tapping noise on tick-over.
Your UK spec 2000 has outer shim buckets and not hydraulic lifters and its unusual for them to go suddenly noisy.

you sure you havent developed piston slap does it go once warm?

tozimpreza 02 October 2009 08:03 PM

im not sure, what are the symptoms of piston slap, not sure i like the sound of it tho?

tozimpreza 02 October 2009 08:04 PM

no the noise is there all the time

harrisonl84 02 October 2009 09:02 PM

hmm not piston slap then. all you can do is get it checked at a local specalist they should recognise the noise straight away. Is she driving ok??
