How much should I be paying for a decent UK classic?
If I buy another classic I want another UK car. What I'm not sure about is pricing.
I want an MY99/00 and relatively standard. A chap local to me had a lovely MY00 that he really did look after and it struggled to make £2K on the bay (it was green though) There are a few that I like but the prices are between £3.5 - £5K. So why would I pay £3K when some can't even break £2K. |
Ebay is usually last chance saloon for motors that have raised little interest locally. £2k to £2.5k seems to be the going rate for Green UK MY99 site unseen. A friend of mine recently sold a beauty with a recent Subaru recon engine on ebay for £2250. The new owner got a bargain, but could just have easily ended up with a shed with no comeback.
Private sellers are not going to advertise at realistic prices as this encourages wheel kickers who come in ridiculous offers (been there, told a few to eff off) so the adverts start at a higher price in the hopes that they are low enogh to attract attention but high enough to invite more realistic offers. At the end of the day all cars, whatever the marque, are only worth what the you as the buyer are willing to pay. If you only want to spend £2k then take a chance on a Fleabay car. You may be lucky and get a bargain, or more likely end up shelling out for repairs on a car that the previous owner could not afford to mantain properly. Take your time looking and spend a bit more locally and the chances are that you will end up with a desirable motor, not a pain in the arse money pit. IMHO of course :) . |
£3750 for the DBM one in classifieds with 47k on the clock - thats a STEAL

No, its too expensive. £3K would be more like it. £3,750 is too much IMO.

You can have my UK2000 for 3k if you want!! Its one of those tough calls, Buying of eBay is always a bit dodgy, you can get good deals but you can (and I have) get ripped off.
If you get a car from an enthusiast then you are kind of hedging your bets. You pay a bit more but the piece of mind element IMO outweighs the worry of buying a pup of eBay or gumtree. I think 3k should see you get a good solid original classic no probs but I would stick to a club car or an established dealer. |
I paid £3200 (in June) for an MY00 DGM Wagon. 63K, FDSH, 1 mod... backbox ...and in superb condition.
I looked at 5 others between 2K and 3K and all were very rough. The pick of the bunch was an MY99 WRX import for £2795. No service history, bodywork badly damaged, holes in the carpet where the drivers feet would be… and a lovely knocking engine! |
No, its too expensive. £3K would be more like it. £3,750 is too much IMO. See here https://www.scoobynet.com/private-sa...-uk-turbo.html for a good example, tho I wouldn't suggest doing it on open forum as it may lead to gazzumping. Why don't you PM an offer and see what he says? :) |
^^ Isn't it standard practice to offer £1k less then agree on a £500 discount ;) Seems to work that way whether car is £3k or £30k :cuckoo:
