Alpina D3
 

Does anyone have any experiences of these cars ? I'm looking at an 06 or 07 with low miles, just wondered if anyone had driven owned one

Never owned one but know someone who did.

06-07 come with single turbo. These start of as 320d se and are taken away by Alpina to have the suspension lowered and a remap on the motor gets the car to about 200 bhp. AC Schnitzer spoiler added to the boot lid and classic Alpina 19" staggered fitment alloys finish of the very nice exterior look in either saloon or estate.

The car rides superbly as they don't have the run flats on them. Deceptively quick on all types of road with mags quoting anything from 6.7 to 7.2 for the 0-60 dash.

The only 3 real gripes about this car.

1. You get next to nothing in terms of equipment as they could be specified with the Sat Nav and I think they only came with half leather.

2. The car has a superb chassis and doesn't have enough power to fully exploit this. Given the engine is probably almost at it's limit in terms of power and torque. I don't think there is to much more you can do to this car.

3. List was around £27k and I think you will need to spend at least £20k-£25k for one now. They do hold there price, but you could get a very good 335d for that money.

The new D3's now have BM's twin turbo diesel engine but I think they have 215 bhp and more torque.

All in all, very nice car.

They are based on a 325DSE IIRC - out handle/ride a M-Sport. They are a touch juicy for a 4 pot diesel.

325 dse are 3 litre six pots diesels

The alpina is a 2 litre 4 pot

I have considered one of these in the past but would prefer a 320d sport or 330d sport instead. Also IIRC the D3's only come in manual gearbox.

Yes this is the latter Bi Turbo model. The original D3 which is what Andy had enquired about is based on the 320d:):thumb:

Thank you for your replies Stryder and others. I bought the 1st D3 on your link list Stryder ( from IMC ) It really had only done 1700 miles, it smells like new !

Bad points :
If I'm being honest it needs the 2nd turbo, it can be a bit laggy low down. Christ knows how you get 47 MPG out of it, best I've seen is 40-45. No sat nav, or ash tray lol.

Good points :
exclusivity-not seen another one on my 60 mile round trip to work, see probably 200 other silver BM's. The ride is absolutely phenominal. It rides better than a 330d I drove on 18's. They way it holds a line around a bend and cannot be unsettled over pot holes/ uneven ground is amazing. It drives like a much smaller, nimbler car, even with dust bin lid wheels. It pulls very well over 2000RPM, very well indeed all the way to redline.
You just get the impression it is a very well made car. Everything is so tight and well bolted together, much better than my previous VW's/Scooby.

An `06 car with 1,700 miles....what had the previous owner bought it for?

Possibly something to do with being near Sytners in Nottingham - Alpina's UK distribution centre. (I think they have 3 used ones for sale at the moment)

We looked at getting one when they first came out but couldn't stomach the ridiculous £2k surcharge to have some options fitted, plus the price of the options.

I'm regularly nipping out for drives for the sake of it in the 335d (vaguely similar) and absolutely loving it.

Got mine from Sytners too - but the Leicester dealership - very impressive service. Makes a change from Vauxhalls comedy customer "service."

This model has a rechargeable battery, and eventually will need replacement. Some solar watches have capacitors, which serve the same purpose as batteries (power storage), but dont need changing.

Nice though, ideal for your lifestyle.

Okay - almost never need a battery change (my 12 year old G Shock (fully digi) lasts 3-4 years per battery, my Cockpit (ana/digi) is still on the first at 3 years old)...! That'll do for me.

Anyway, it'll keep good time and nice to have a watch without digital on it. Almost grown up...

Thanks Volks. *story* goes Volks it was bought by a company director who was away for most of the year on business. I thought the mileage may be moody until I viewed the car, the guy selling it, and the other cars he had. The car is like new, looking underneath it looked like it had never seen rain ! Certainley has now though lol.
I saw a post from you with your 335 on Mattee, I was torn as to which one to get. My ins was less on the Alpina and I liked the blingness of it. They are great cars and I agree about BMW service. 20k till my next one so wont see em for a while :)
