Fun diesel up to £10k ?
 

Needs to be fun enough to stop me getting bored quickly as I spend a lot of time in the car (3hrs/c.140 miles a day), deffo manual and be capable of c. 40 mpg at motorway speeds. (Upto £10k for no more than 5 yrs old and up to 70k miles.)

Can only think of 330d, 530d or 159 2.4, anything else worth looking at ?

Agreed...but only because its as cheap as chips and will tune especially for mid-range in gear stuff :thumb:

From the cars you mention I'd say the Fabia would be the cheaper option than what you specify.

At 10k then your budget is over the Fabia and so I think the BMW dervs are where its at :D

just bought an 05 Astra 1.9 CDTi SRi 150 XP as our run around, great car, build quality is excellent and it looks the part as well.

You'd pickup a 06-07 for £10k, although the earlier models had more toys as standard and were better built.

What about a Seat Ibiza TDi Cupra 160? IMO soooo much better than the VRs that I test drove.

I had one, and they're great cars to put a grin on yer face and get you 50+ mpg if taking it steady on the motorway.
Big 4 pot AP brakes are awesome on this wee go-kart!
160bhp out of the box, and easily tuned to over 200!

You should get a good low mileage one, and have a tonne of cash to put cruise and a remap on it within your budget?

Interesting thoughts, I'd want something bigger than the Fabia and Ibiza, as I need to ferry the family about at the weekend and would prefer more metal around me.
Any more ideas ?

If I was doing 3hrs driving a day, I would have comfort high on my list. The 330d is a great choice with a fine balance between comfort and sport.

How about a 2.7 TDI jag Type R Sport:

Thks - some real food for thought - can't believe the price of the S type...although I couldn't live with an auto. Just found an E60 530d manual (with cloth!) for not a lot, might be worth a look and not as dated as an E46. Alfa 159 2.4 looks stonking and v tempting too. Keep the suggestions coming.

Got stomped on by a 330D on the M6 last year. Could not believe the pulling power from 50 up. Don't ask me which year, all I saw was the badge......once. Lost sight as I slowed for the A14 turn off nightmare.


That was what prompted me to mod my previously standard UK turbo. Now waiting to meet him again :norty:

I cant beleive that nobody has mentioned the 2.0 tdci Focus, the best handling FWD hatch, trouble is it is overlooked due to only having 140 bhp and no sporting pretensions, we have a big Galaxy 2,0 tdci and that flies for what it is, in a half tonne or more lighter Focus it is great, plus you can get them remapped.

The Fabia is great but doesnt really handle as standard, ditto all the VW stuff, its just ranges from Mk4 Golf's that are wallowy things (unless fettled) to just about ok, the Focus, even with a big heavy diesel lump still handles, ditto the Mondeo.

I can understand the desire for a BMW 320d or 330d, only drive the 320 d and that was brilliant, so the 330 must be even better but it will be older, leggier and potentially more expensive, they arent infallible, dont get a 335d and turn into an arse like some do though :D

As for a 330d beating a standard uk turbo, it isnt that humiliating, they are more expensive (double) and more powerful.

It wasn't humiliating, just jaw droppingly awe inspiring.

I am not one of these deluded owners who think their Scooby is the fastest most unbeatable car in the universe. In fact, compared to my old Porsche turbo my Scoob doesn't accelerate, or handle and definitely cannot stop! but I love the package as a whole. That and I can afford to run two which saves arguments with the wife LOL

But that 330d was awesome to watch. The back end went down, I said "uh oh" and that was the last I saw of it....

I must say, I have had a couple of "goes" with 330d's in my Saab and they havent dissapeared, even a mighty 535d didnt romp away.

I hear tales of 330d remaps to 292bhp and 510lbs. More than enough to "romp away" from a UK Scoob with 208bhp 201lbs. Believe it, it happened, and will happen to you unless you have a seriously quick Saab.

ive a 535 m sport (diesal) with a remap 335/600 and it romps well :D :)

Had an E39 530d sport. Excellent car but if it goes wrong, be prepared to spend some money.

Also had an Astra Sport Hatch 150 sri xp. Much better than you would think. Decent handling, fairly quick in a straight line, and really good looking motor. Not sure you will find an XP for under £10k, but maybe a 5 door hatch. Get a DTUK box and you'll instantly see 200 bhp and straight line performance that would give most petrol hot hatches a run!

Also my little bro has a Fabia VRS. Extremely underated car. Standard!! He has just lowered it a little and has had it remapped. Now running 175bhp!

So, that extra 24 bhp would see it dissapearing into the distance, despite the extra quarter of a tonne they weigh compared to mine, mine does 0-60 in about 6.5, 100 in 15/16 so how mcuh faster would it need to be to pull away like I was stood still, it was marginally quicker, the haze fromt he exhaust and the squatting rear suggested he was trying, I tried the same thing behind an M6 and that did p1ss off sharpish.

There is so much bollocks talked about these things, they are quick but they arent supercars, the wont destroy something with silimar power to weight.

Saab is 250 bhp with 288 lbs ft, weighs 1.5 tonnes, its quick-ish.

Ok maybe not that much more powerful but the 413 lb ft torque figure that it pumps out sure would help it pull away i would imagine.

It was a little quicker, but like I say, it didnt "romp" away, bhp/tonne is still the main measure of performance when going flat out, torque is very useful when in gear but when going side by side its down to the power versus the weight. Mine is remapped, had the 535 been I suspect I would have been left standing, can only assume it wasnt - yet.

That said, I don't really like the Saab, its dull, fairly badly made, but it does move quite well in a straight line (if run on V-Power, otherwise it stutters), well until the clutch started slipping this afternoon it did ! should have bought the 330i I looked at. Would trade some straight line accelaration for some fun .

Keep getting scared off by that horrible word called "RELIABILITY!". Its the same reason why I have never owned a French car. From this side of the fence though, I'm starting to think I'm missing out :D

Scooby was 208 bhp with 201 lbs ft, weighs 1.2 tonnes, its quick-ish, and never stood a chance LOL.

I do like the 159 Ti's.

Trouble is that there isn't a dealer that close to me and etc. etc. etc.

Some one in the WYIOC's (Alan C) has a remapped 335D and i spoke to one of the orther lads who has a 300bhp+ STI and he says the beemer pulls away on the straight, now whether this is to do with the Scoobs AWD transmission loss i dont know but i think either the 535D or the 335D when remapped are very impressive as an all round punchy car with reasonable economy.
