this may be stupid but...

to anyone who has de-tango'd or black mod thier front headlights.

once the headlight has been removed and you are about to pop them in the oven or in front of a heater. .... here is the possible stupid question

but did you leave the bulbs in the units or take them out, i want to do it to my jdm sti this wekend with any luck, i have read the de-tango guide and it is not mentioned but thought i better ask before buggering up the xeon lights

cheers

I did the same here all bulbs out and cooked on a slow heat untill the sealant was soft ! Make sure you put extra sealant around the headlight unit as i had to take them back out again a week later as i had condensation in the light so i re sealed them with tiger seal all ok since:)

yeah take as much out / off the lights as possible; bulbs, wiring looms, holders the lot. just dont forget where they come from to put them back lol

stevie1982 18 September 2009 04:41 PM

i take it clear bathroom sealant is not to be used?

I used a heat gun on mine didn’t fancy the idea of the oven. (02 STI lights but think the sealers would be the same) You can keep a closer watch on the temp and you are only heating up the part with the sealer in it.
You shouldn’t need any more sealant just warm up both sides when you are ready to assemble them and they will seal back up :thumb:

did mine in the oven not actualy in it but on the pull down oven front didnt fancy over cooking them

Removed my bulbs and used a heat gun to part the headlamps, didn't like the idea of sticking them in the oven. Parting the lamps was the easy part, getting the lamps actually off the car was not easy. When I put them back in I sprayed WD40 onto the two nipples and they went home dead easy:thumb:

hi mate use gutter sealant or tiger seal

Meallbhan 18 September 2009 09:02 PM

Black silicone for me with no problems. Took them apart with an electric fan heater.

mine went back together with the original sealant just heated up, no condensation / gaps so far, touch wood !

oh an I just put them in oven for 10 mins, they were fine

G.Mac 19 September 2009 09:45 PM

Yea mine went back with origional sealant, just did it in a few steps, once I got the tango bits out I stuck the 2 bits back together and lightly did up the screws and placed back in the oven for a few mins then took the unit out the oven and tightened up the screws a little bit and replaced back in the oven. Did this about 3 times and not had any fogging problems over the last 3 1/2 years
