Steve Lawson fitted a ITG for me. Took it off last week after 8 months to check coils!! The filter looked fine. No mess etc.

There was one going cheap in the "For Sale "section.

i've been running a K&N element for 8 months with no problems.

If the ITG drips gunk, it's green...or I'm colour blind :)

However, it drips down due to gravity which is on the dirty side of the filter. Air being sucked in will not cause this effect to be reversed....the goo is very sticky. I've run them in two cars now, 50k km's and no problems - 1st one did 70k km's before I bought a new one..

I guess the K&N is fine too - just be careful how much fluid (is it still oil, like the old days?) you put into it when you clean it......this stuff isn't very sticky, although it will coat the MAF if over-oiled :)

You throw the ITG away when it gets too dirty (can surface crap a couple of times though).

Do the pre MY97s suffer the same MAF problems as the later models?

I thought the Hot Wire MAF was more sturdy than the later Hot Film MAFs?

Would also be interested to hear if Induction Kits cause the same mid-range lean out problems with Hot Wire MAFs that have been experienced with the later Hot Film MAFs.

Still leaning towards panel & maybe snorkelectomy or cold air induction - rather than straight induction kit.

Has any one experienced problems with either of these on a Pre My97?

Further thoughts anyone?

My understanding is that both early and late cars suffer from contamination of the MAF (but maybe early ones are easier to clean?).

However, vibration related failures affect the later ones.

Also note - being able to clean a contaminated MAF is of little benefit if your engine went bang because it got dirty. With any mods I'd recommend a minimum of a knock sensor that will at least alert you something's wrong....and allow you to get off the gas in time!

Why is everyone so paranoid.... Alot of 80's Turbo Charges cars didn't even have a knock Sensor.

My Series 1 RS Turbo certainly didn't and that was running 180BHP from 1994 till 2000 when I sold it, this was then increased to 185BHP with a charge cooler by the next owner and is probably still running with 100,000 miles on the clock. It had 90,000 miles on it when I sold it.

This was running a Panel K&N (Oil Impregnated) and later a N&N Cone. Neither of these effected the Hot Wire.

Why would an engine go bang if the MAF was contaminated with oil ?

Everybody gets paranoid when they (or a friend) :rolleyes: has had to pay the cost of a rebuild.

Oil on the MAF will cause it to underread, causing the engine to lean out, potentially causing an engine failure.

Knock sensors were fitted to a lot of 80's cars, particularly those running close to the limits or trying to run low quality fuels (SAABs etc).

I'm glad your Escort survived the amount of power you got from it, and hope that everybodys' Scoobs do likewise.

Back to the subject of filters, does anybody have experience of the BMC?

I'm also considering my options on this one too as I i've already upped my insurance but can't decide on what to fit - lol

So not speaking from experience here - just what I've concluded from reading other posts & speaking to other people.

ITG - Blue Goo oozes out (disclaimer if not fitted correctly?)
Ramair - not as good as you might think (Scooby Racer - had comments on this - you could ask him ;))
K&N - Heard nothing bad - yet!

Not too keen on induction systems (engine heat?), however, may be worth looking at cold air inductions - although pricy.

Another option could be the infamous snorkelectomy!

Any one had any water induction problems with the last two?
