EJ22 (22B Engine)

Hi Chaps,

I'm after some info on an engine I recently bought. (From a well known Subaru breakers, scottish subarus)

I am told it is a block bought in from america, the turbo charged EJ22 they have out there.

It has EJ22 stamped on the block anyway :)

If it is what it is, what sort of power can I expect this lump to handle? I own M-Tech Auto so have the rolling road etc, and obvsiouly know the basics in terms of supporting mods etc. Just a question of internals really. They say its safe up to asround 500bhp... am I being told the truth? Can I present the engine number to confirm its origins etc?

What can I do to check without really stripping it all apart.

Any help very much appreciated.

I have almost finished gutting the shell for hill climbing etc, and don't really want to spend my time with this lump if its gunna go bang after five minutes of mapping.

Cheers,
Matt

Also, what turbo should I go with? IHI or GT35? Theg uys there are really good with the advice, but its a bit cloudy around the spec of the engine. (I was orinigally shown pics of the engine being built by email, then i recieved an engine that had been removed from a car, all dirty etc) I only paid £1,100 for it though, is this about right?

Matt

Have a little look here......Subaru EJ engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

mattatmtech 12 September 2009 01:14 PM

Ah thanks for the info. So it has some improvements (not including capacity) over the EJ20.

They say it is the only type of Turbo charged EJ22, hence I would assume it to be the same spec as the 22B? Am I right, or welllll off..?

Myles 12 September 2009 01:18 PM

EJ22G Turbo DOHC

* Horsepower: 280 PS (206 kW; 276 bhp) @ 6000 rpm
* Torque: 362.8 N·m (268 lb·ft) @ 3200 rpm

Usage:

* Impreza STi 22B GC8 series(JDM)

If yours is the EJ22G, the above applies. If yours is the EJ22T it says its a SOHC turbo, no intercooler etc.

mattatmtech 12 September 2009 01:32 PM

Hi,

Yes its the DOHC not SOHC so most definately is the EJ22G :)

In that case, what power can the internals take? If we assume them to be stock 22B.

Cheers,
Matt

TonyBurns 12 September 2009 01:35 PM

Standard about 350 safely, you would need to upgrade the rods, pistons, crank etc for 500bhp, but it should be a close deck block on that engine so pretty strong :)

Tony:)

mattatmtech 12 September 2009 01:56 PM

Ah well thats good news at least!

I believe they have upgraded the rods pistons etc. Going to talk to them monday and find out the exact spec :)

Cheers,
Matt

Refering to your turbo question (and providing internals are up to the job), i'd advise the S206 turbo from Enginetuner.

Should help you out a bit.
Very good spool on the 2.1 so the 2.2 will spool a bit better.

Six Star 12 September 2009 05:06 PM

Could this be one of the early legacy engines ?

mattatmtech 12 September 2009 07:25 PM

Stig,
thanks for the info on the turbo, definately something I will have a look at.

It seems to not come on till past 4k though, which for hill climbing may inhibit me slightly. 450/500 bhp is fair power, and for a turbo to both support that much power and spool that quickly it is certainly impressive.

I may have to look at subsituting high end power for a quicker spooling, smaller unit.

Speaking of turbos.. has anyone seen this stuff? Is it just cheap yank crap or would it be any good?

TH3_5T1G 12 September 2009 07:30 PM

Would you be using race fuel for the hillclimb events?
Sti8 heads and race fuel will get her spooling about 600-800rpm sooner methinks. But if it's spool you're after then there are quicker out there but will not see the same gains.
Keep us updated :thumb:

TH3_5T1G 12 September 2009 07:33 PM

I'd imagine a 25G will spool just as slow if not slower than the S206.

Ive just got an ej22 block and sti heads and been informed that if on the block it has not got ej22t then it may have been an n/a 2.2 early legacy engine. how true this is im unsure but my ej22 is being fitted into my car at the moment after fitted it will be in for a few other mods and mapping then ill have an idea whats what, ill keep you informed with my findings

mattatmtech 12 September 2009 07:59 PM

Cheers for info chaps, and cookie yes please do so. Mione def doesent have the T, yet when you look at EJ20's they dont have the G/K etc on there either so it may be a myth. Its def a boost engine though according to SS. It has Turbo onm the cam covers which may not mean much but its there.

im hoping that the block used for mine was a turbo block and not a n/a block if n/a then the comp ratios will be up higher which in my experiance can be good in some ways for torque and boost but no good for much over a few 0000s miles cos it will melt things but im no expert so could be wrong. last time i tried it was on an rs turbo and it went like f*ck but didnt last past 1500 miles

The EJ22T has 2 breathers on the block, 1 in the normal place and the other just behind the oil pressure switch housing. The 2nd breather is often plugged and blocked off. Tne EJ22T also has under piston oil squirters. These engines were centre thrust.

The EJ22 found in the infamous 22B has 1 breather in the normal place and no under piston squirters, im lead to believe the 22B engine was rear thrust and some say it was dual thrust. Both units are closed deck blocks. Id feature for the closed deck on both blocks is on the rear right of the engine block as you look at it it has ribs raised on the face. They dont have the usual hatchings near the alternator.

The EJ22 NA engine is found in many legacys and is open deck.

mine i think is open deck and i cant see the oil outlets as shown in pics but i may have not seen them cos i didnt look for them but i will check

Jolly Green Monster 13 September 2009 01:17 AM

are heads attached? if not post pics of deck etc ;)

Agree with what 71/200 has posted.. althogh the second breather is not normally noticed etc..

Have mapped standard rods and pistons in a EJ22T with 98 uk heads to 400bhp no issue.

Simon

Jolly Green Monster 13 September 2009 01:22 AM

just checked through pictures of my own (can't be bothered to go outside :)) and I don't think I have that second breather.. but 100% an EJ22T block.. closed deck and oil squirters

I'm sure the old legacy 22T still retains webbing cast marks on the oil filter cast area though?

Jolly Green Monster 13 September 2009 02:00 AM

it doesn't have the hatching like the CDB 2.0.. ie. none around above crank sensor / crank/ oil pump
http://images.fotopic.net/y0m0yd.jpg

not sure about oil filter area

71/200 13 September 2009 07:25 AM

I would say the 2nd breather on yours was blocked off Simon. I saw one over here done and it looked factory tbh they had done such a good Job. It does have the hatchings on the filter house and flywheel housing.

Hmm i think theres some confusion somewhere.....As i'm sure the earlier legacys did have hatchings ....heres a pic to get you thinking....,this EJ22 has been overbored to 100mm But the hatching on the oil filter casting can be seen and so can the hatching on the rear of the engine as mentioned earlier...

JGM - i'm assuming yours is a US block? Would you know.

Attachment 52677

It's a GT40 turbo guys, mmmm.

You can see the cross hatchings on the block..

71/200 13 September 2009 12:55 PM

I mentioned the hatching under the alternator is not present on the EJ22T Baly, think JGM was agreeing with me. All the normal cast hatch marks are there but none under the alternator like the 2.0CDB.

On the Pics above Rossi has posted you can see the 2nd breather has been blocked off.

Jolly Green Monster 13 September 2009 01:53 PM

yes agree with you Stu (71/200)

Jolly Green Monster 13 September 2009 02:07 PM

just checked and my block has front breather (blocked off) too.

STI_Baly 13 September 2009 03:50 PM

I was mainly refering to the cast hatchings on the oil filter cast area guys. I can also confirm that the hatching is not behind the alternator.

Interesting that you have a breather pipe too simon. I'm assuming that the breathers existed on all the early legacy lumps?
