weighing in car?
 

I need to find an engine, loom + gearbox for a project, and it appears to be cheaper to buy a "working" car and take the stuff out of it, than to buy spares (plus then I get to test the stuff first to make sure it all works).

However, how do you go about getting rid of the body shell etc when you're done?

Anyone done anything similar?

Is it as simple as finding a scrapyard locally, and towing the car there, or is it more involved? I'd really want to get the "scrap value" for the car as well, to help with financing the project, if possible

Weighing in a car is not as it used to be.

Because the scrap merchants are now supposed to drain all fluids, and take the tyres off, it has become " not worth their while."

Also the price for scrap is currently at an all time low, hence the rusty scrap metal mountains you may see around the merchants depots, and docks.

I know a few naughty lads from my younger years and they preferred to chop the thing up with a big ass grinder into as many little bits they could, and then distribute the parts about the place !

Just a matter of taking it there, weighing it, taking the wheels off and getting paid.
Fluids won't be a problem for you, with the engine.

I'm pretty sure it was about 80 quid a tonne a few weeks back. I'd guess a bare shell without any running gear would be around 600kgs.

I got 50 quid for the last car I scrapped.

I got £120 this time last year for a VW Polo from scrap!!

£122.40 Today for a metric tonne of scrap steel.


I visited my local merchant two weeks back, who turned me away unless I drained the fluids and took the tyres off.

My local scrap yard took the car for free, as though they were doing me a favour.

I think you would get more for a dead horse....

Thanks for the info guys, maybe it's easier and not a lot "more expensive" to just get someone to come and pick the shell up, in that case..
