.... is this an expensive job?

Theres an engine for sale advertised with big ends 2 + 4 gone - its cheap compared to a running engine so I assume its a pricey problem to fix?

Err

Too true!

Without trying to sound as if I'm being rude, if you need to ask the question you probably don't have the knowledge required to examine the rest of the engine to check for the other damage that will have occurred. Hence, I suggest that you take someone with you to see it that does, or forget it. ;)

Duncan :)

PS Makes a change for No.3 not to go first

Duncan - Exactly - I have no idea what I'd be looking for myself and would definitely need to take someone to check for any other damage.

That was really the jist of my question: is there likely to be other damage.

I reckon its best for me to leave it alone!!
Cheers

Other possible / likely damage; :(
  • crank
  • rods
  • pistons
  • bores
  • oil pump
  • oil cooler
  • turbo bearings
  • etc
That's enough depression for now!

Duncan :)

PS I suggest that you are right to walk away!

I had just blown piston nr 2 / cylinder nr 2, my big-end bearings, crank, and crankbearings are FINE.

An complete engine repair with 4 new piston, cylinder honing and new big-end bearings / crank bearings (hell it open now anyway and it has run 77kkm already) is in Holland just as expensive as ordering a new shortblock (somewhere around EUR 2250). So I went for the new shortblock.

If you are interested in the crank / big-end of my old shortblock (which are OK and show no fysical damage) drop me a note.

All of this with a MY99, see http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=72098&Page=2

Mark.
